Life Choices - Are You in Control?

Health and wellness is big business these days. People seek therapy every day when they feel they have lost control of their lives, or to find out how to get control when they did not realize it was possible.

It is natural to want to thrive and be all that we can be, but some people do not take advantage of their ability to do so. One who is autonomous strives to do their best at anything they pursue, believing they can succeed, and then doing so. These people have faith in themselves and know that they can accomplish whatever they work hard at. Autonomous people know that they have choices, and pursue their interests with a higher level of optimism than those who feel their life choices are limited. I think that autonomy is a result of both genetics and environment, and these people just know they will achieve their goals before they even begin.

Entity theorist believe that the choices we have in life are limited by circumstances, environment or luck. They do not agree with the notion that change is possible, or that one has the power to make such changes. An entity theorist believes that we are as we are seen to be, and that success is possible only according to variables in life which say that it is so. These people would feel that they do not have choices available to them for advancement, and neither do they think that they have any control over their destiny.

On the other hand, incremental theorists are more optimistic. These people make the choice to change things in their lives which they are not satisfied with. They understand that they do have option to improve their current situations, and that they can choose to be in control of whatever they wish to accomplish. Because an incremental theorist understands that they have choices, they would not feel the need to make bad choices when better choices are available to them. Someone who views their choices as being limited, is more likely to take the path of least resistance, even if it meant doing something illegal or involve some kind of unsavory behavior.

While we all need to feel some sense of freedom, it is also natural to want to belong. We can choose to be in control and make decisions to enhance our lives while also being a part of different communities. We can choose be proactive, or be idle and feel unsatisfied. Possessing an internal locus of control is advantageous. Being in control allows us to remain focused, and we are therefore better equipped for a positive outcome than someone who has an external locus of control. This group of people are more easily distracted and vulnerable to stressors, and associated physical and mental illness. What kind of person are you?

Re Life Choices

The point of this article was for readers to examine what choices they have, that they may not have previously identified. Your reference to Jewish history hardly counts as being an ideal situation in which to make choices; however, they did not lose hope, and that was by choice. Most people underestimate themselves, and many of us do indeed believe that choices are just in our imagination. Those who take a proactive approach in learning how to tell the difference, will succeed. Thank you for reading me. Kerry:)

Debatable Topic

This topic is is good for a debate. There may be many theories, and why not after all life has its mysterious ways and there are all kinds of people living in different circumstances, environment and "luck". Would you say that all those Jews who were exterminated by Hitler during the World War had a choice? That they could have changed their destiny or luck if they wanted to? Wasn't their fate determined by circumstances and environment out of their control? Choices, Freedom are words that sound good to everybody. But, how many of us are really able to exercise them? The world and the environment at large are very complicated today more than what it was maybe a decade ago. Life is not so simple anymore. Look around you! A simple example of this: I read an article in the newspaper the other day about a sweeper in a medical hospital who won a jackpot lottery of about 2 Crore Rupees! He must have never even dreamt of so much wealth in his entire life! "Luck" was on his side. "Luck" that is hard to find in these days and time. So you would think that his life would change dramatically after this event, No? WRONG! He still continues to live in the same small apartment on rent and travels by the same bus everyday to the same job that he was doing earlier! Why? Because he did not invest his hard earned money in the right manner. The first thing he did was to buy himself a BMW car, which he had no place to park, and so promptly, all the spare parts of that vehicle were stolen. He also invested in a Qualis, which he is now forced to use as a taxi to earn money, and since he can't find any place to park it. He also bought a flat, which is still not ready and is having some legal issues with the handing over. So, he waits for "destiny" to do some good to him. My question is: Are we really in control of ourselves or anything else around us? According to me, It's only an illusion! Does Life really give us any choices? Or are we lost in the maze?

Thank you helenkw. It is sad

Thank you helenkw. It is sad too, that some cultures, being more collectivist societies, do not see their own true potential, or feel they are unable to act on their thoughts.

we make our own luck

I enjoyed your article Regards "Entity theorist believe that the choices we have in life are limited by circumstances, environment or luck. " - Then they are pretty stupid then! We make our own luck in my opinon, we can open our own doors, and we can chose to be opportunistic. The biggest hurdle in my opinion is just realizing this, some people have been so opressed they don't always see this, that much is environmental. Nice write up, thanks.
