Life is a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

(I am breaking this article off from my other article There is No Such Thing as Colorblind because I wanted to add more detail.)

Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy. What exactly does that mean? Well, let's examine it. We know what life is...if you don't have it, you are dead. Simple. The other half of the expression means that there are times when we voice what we don't want and the very thing we didn't want to happen DID happen. For instance, let's say you are running a little late one morning. You say out loud, "Gee, I sure hope I don't miss the bus." By the time you get to the bus stop, guess what happened? Right, you missed your bus. That, my friends, is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So, life is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you look at all the good and beautiful things in the world--they are always around us if we make up our minds to pay attention--they are there for a reason. Namely, for the enjoyment of those who look for it. Does that mean that the people enjoying the good things in life are evil or stole those good things from another person? Hardly.

The Universe is a dispassionate granter of what we want. Yes, we may say we want a million dollars, a huge mansion on a hill, or even something more altruistic, like world peace. If that is true--and I believe it to be true--then it would make sense for all of us to keep our feelings and focus on those things, no matter what happens to us in our daily lives.

Why, then, do we not? Why do we surround ourselves with negative friends, racking up thousands of dollars in debt to buy those things that do not make us happy, and keep our focus on the things we don't want? Is is any wonder that we are unhappy with our lives and don't get what we want or have to work unimaginably hard to get what we want only to find out that we didn't want it in the first place?

As one example, let's examine gangsta rap music (or its country music equivalent, honky tonk). You have people who already are doing without and who are surrounded by abject poverty, homelessness, gang/domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and a breakdown of the family. Then, you see them playing that kind of music, which celebrates the very things they don't want. Self-fulfilling prophecy because they are staying focused on the very things they do not want and the Universe, being that dispassionate granter of what we spend most of our energy on, gives us more of it.

What we need to be doing is making a list of what we DO want, using "I am grateful because I have..." as if you already have what you want. Whenever you find yourself getting down because of present circumstances, take out your list and read it, meditate on it. Do the same thing right before you go to sleep and right when you wake up in the morning.

The only thing we can change is ourselves. The only thing we can change about the other person is how we react to them. Make up your mind right now to stay focused on what you want and you can achieve anything.

Would you rather believe you are healthy and prosperous and prove that life is a self-fulfilling prophecy or would you rather continue complaining about being sick and broke all the time and also have proof that life is a self-fulfilling prophecy? The CHOICE is up to you. It always is.

I don't doubt it

I still stand by my argument and belief that we choose how our life begins. When I look at my own childhood and those more challenging childhoods of other people, I am humbled to believe what some people signed up to do. Thanks for your comment! DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Manifesting Destiny

For the most part I agree with you. In fact,I have a wall that is full of pictures relating to my goals and I do my best each day to achieve these goals. However, I think the world is a very imperfect place and as an example a Native Indian who is born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is going to encounter more difficulty in achieving his or her daily needs in comparison to someone who is born mentally/physically/emotionally whole. Therefore, it is important to be thankful for everything we have while taking a moment to empathize with, pray for, and/or help those who are less fortunate while taking care of our own needs. Good article, insightful. Mike
