Lifehacker: Handy Tips to Simplify Everyday Life

The words "hack" and "hacker" have a negative connotation among the general public. To computer users and professionals, however, "hack" has come to mean any kind of fix or workaround to solve a problem or make something work better.

We hear about Google hacks, PowerPoint hacks, etc., but a popular Web site called Lifehacker extends that geek sensibility to making things easier in all aspects of life. In particular, it seeks out ways that technology can make our daily lives easier.

That was the promise of computerization and the personal computer in general but we all know that that promise, like the prospect of the "paperless office," have been a colossal bust. To put it in the words of the Lifehacker founders, "Lifehacker recommends the software downloads and Web sites that actually save time. Don't live to geek; geek to live."

Hence the name. At Lifehacker you'll find all kinds of tips for making simple "hacks" to your everyday life that will makes things smoother, easier, more enjoyable. The suggestions from from users, from the Web site creators, from other Web sites and even TV. You'll also find a download of the day.

In the last few months Lifehacker has featured:
* tips on how to chill a can of Coke in two minutes, from the TV show Mythbusters
* a site that tells you whether a domain name is available for purchase as you type it
* hangover cures
* tips for project management
* what cell phone providers will allow you to have two phone lines on one phone?
* how to expand your wireless network with a wireless distribution system

As a tech fan who likes to find new and better ways to work, I've put Lifehacker at the top of my favorite bookmarks list.
