I also agree

People should get married if they feel it's the right thing to do for them, but I think the formalities or symbolism of marriage should not be confused with love. It's more like a business contract, sure, they might love eachother but not because they're married and they don't get married because they love eachother.

I see how it serves it's purpose

because of the specific circumstances in India, and it may be a good thing considering that it protects people from abuse. That's why I say it has nothing to do with love but rather protects women from criminals that wants to abuse them or their situation. However, in my personal Utopia love and legal matters belongs to separate worlds. I guess that's why I've never been or will ever get married.... Marriage just doesn't seem like a romantic idea to me, but rather an increasingly obsolete formality.

leaving the law?

I agree with the whole marrage thing.

law and relationships

can be a tricky business. This news item is in respect to Indian conditions and laws for women in India. You see, live-in relationships as such is a "new" term in India and only a recent trend among the youth who are aping the ways of the west (on one hand) and on the other hand are those women probably from the poorer sections of society who are "married" in the Hindu temple by a priest but have no "official" record of the marriage. These women can find it difficult to prove that they were "married" to the man in question! Therefore men can easily take advantage of the situation and abuse these women or leave them high and dry. Fact is that all are confused about the situation and really don't know how to handle it! (legally)!

I think it's best to leave the law

outside personal relationships. Marriage is an institution and has nothing to with love. If two people can't maintain a relationship based on love without being legally bound to it's not love, simple as that. Marriage is redundant in a modern society. what I do understand is the need for laws to protect people from abuse and oppression, so go ahead, but it shouldn't be a tool to gain power for women or anybody else.

Live in relationships

Live in relationshipa can be the best thing for some couples, but it does'nt work out half the time. There are lots of fights, and sometimes abusing. Lets say, if the man is abusing the woman, the live in relationship can be lead to separation. Young woman/men have a right, the men also deserve to be protected not only the woman.
