Living Among The Amish in Upstate New York; A Personal Experience

Living Among The Amish in Upstate New York; A Personal Experience

Back in the early nineties I moved Upstate New York for 1 1/2 years. It was just outside of a little town known as Heuvelton. I lived in a trailer that I think my landlord found at a Smithsonian garage sale. The trailer was set out among the beautiful farms, that Upstate New York is known for. The very best part was that a lot of my neighbors were Amish. Now I know over the years they have gotten a bad rap for one thing or another, but I'm here to tell you, they can be my neighbors anytime!

I never saw such hard working happy people. Never disturbing their neighbors and always having a hello when they went by in their wagons. It was so cute to see the well behaved Amish children running around without their shoes on. They only wore them in the winter when it got cold. I never saw an argument or harsh word ever come out of their mouths. As far as I am concerned they were the perfect neighbors. No loud music either!

One of my fondest memories was from their little handmade baked goods stand just a few hundred feet down from my home. They had baked goods, such as pies, homemade bread and preserves which was like tasitng a piece of heaven. I mean really, just put their preserves on a hunk of their bread and it was like having dessert. I still to this day miss that cute little baked goods stand. Sometimes I even dream about iit, Yes, their stuff was that good!

So in closing I must say I had a very wonderful experience getting to know my Amish neighbors, and if it wasn't so darrn cold up there near the Canadian border, I wouild welcome those Amish people not only to be my neighbors, but as my friends as well!

Great work

I have one of their fireplaces that I bought almost a year ago or was it six months.  Anyway, it is great.  I know they didn't do all the work on the burner but the woodwork is wonderful, and they did do that part.

I have much admiration for farmers and people that make a living with their hands building things.  I grew up working and of course living on a farm.  I learned to admire people that do the work but not to enjoy it and could never be a farmer myself.

Great work my friend!
