Living Left Handed In A Right Handed World

Living Left Handed In A Right Handed World

How many so called "lefty's" do you know? It's amazing when you think about it, just how few of us are left handed. I spent my entire life trying to fit into a right handed world. There are a lot of things that right handed people take for granted that those of us "lefty's" have to live with or accept on a regular basis.

It often feels that the left handed people get neglected by many of the major manufacturers. I play the guitar, and let me tell you, it's not easy finding a good guitar that fits my style, expectations, and price range. On average things for left handed people are limited at best and almost always more expensive. Just walk into a music shop and check out what they have in stock for left handed people. It is almost pitiful!

It doesn't end with guitars either. Power tools offer up the even more complications. The major difference with power tools is in the wrong hands (pun intended) they can be quite dangerous. When I operate a chainsaw or a circular saw I am forced to hold it with a right handed grip. Yes, over time this does become more comfortable but it almost never becomes natural. I've spent a lot of years working with power tools (many of them designed for the right handed) and can say that anytime you use a tool improperly, including in with the wrong grip you are asking for trouble down the road.

It's not all bad though. If you believe statistics left handed people are more intelligent and creative per person. We only make up about 10 percent of the population, in a fight this gives us a clear advantage. Many time our poor unsuspecting opponent is expecting a right when suddenly the get hit with a left. Being left handed many of us are used to having a right handed opponent.

Many famous and talented people were known for being left handed. Jimi Hendix, often described as the greatest electric guitarist to have ever lived was left handed. Leonardo da Vinci and Ludwig van Beethoven were two very talented "lefty's". We also can't forget the fact that Albert Einstein, Ben Franklin, and Isaac Newton were among us as well. To tell you the truth the list can go on and on quite easily.

It's tough at times being left handed in a world where everything seems to be made for right handed people, but I for one wouldn't give it up for a second. There's something mysterious about left handed people. It most certainly has an effect on the way the brain works. Actually, it's probably the other way around. Nevertheless, there is no question in my mind that left handedness is benefit and not a disadvantage as others may believe. It is undeniable that many of the greatest people to have ever lived were left handed. If you're left handed be proud and embrace it. It will lead you to your own greatness.

@MJ - re astrological coincidences...

MJ: Just wondered are your bro and auntie Pisces by any chance? By the way: Liked the article not what I expected though. The comment "life of a leftie" brought me to read. There was something else I wanted to point out but its gone out of my head - how annoying is that! Really pertinent it was - no won't come to me. Too tired that's why - bet I remember when I go to bed All the best AAT2 JOIN XOMBA HERE FREE Xomba is an international online community and anyone can join. My significant other is a

My significant other is a lefty as well as a friend of mine (who happens to play the guitar as well) and I have a cousin that is left handed. I'm sorry to hear you brother didn't learn the guitar, it's an amazing instrument. On the other side of the spectrum it sounds like being left handed has worked out pretty well for him, other than being accident prone (hey, it's dangerous living in a right handed world.) Hopefully the school wasn't too tough on your aunt. I remember hearing the stories as a kid about how they would force students to write right handed. Most of them seemed pretty harsh to a 7 year old, actually they still seem a little harsh. ;o

Life of the "Lefty"

No, he didn't learn guitar. He only signed up because his friend talked him into it. : ) My aunt and my brother are the only "Lefties" and coincidently they share the same birthday. My aunt was "taught" to be a "righty" in school, but that was back in the 50's. My brother has struggled with the environmental "rights", but other than being accident prone as a child (he broke his leg twice and his foot once) he has survived to a position of authority in the Air Force and Sheriff's Department. Although he generally is not controlling of others, I'm sure he can be! : ) Sending Happy Thoughts and Smiles - MJ Avatar: Belief My journey for Balance Subscribe to MJ's Xombytes

Ahh, the fond childhood

Ahh, the fond childhood memories of bumping elbows at the dinner table. Did your brother ever actually learn the guitar, either left handed or right? Michael Angelo Batio, voted one of the best shred guitarists, was a "lefty" that learned to play the guitar right handed. His weakest hand was his picking hand, strangely enough, he is known for having one of the fastest and strongest picking hands in the industry. I couldn't even fathom trying to play the guitar right handed. Hopefully, your brother wasn't hurt. It's amazing; what us "lefty's" lack in control for our environment, we make up for with our control over the people around us... just kidding, maybe :) Anyway, thanks for stopping by.

Lefty or Righty

One of my brothers is a "lefty". We always had to arrange seating at family dinners with him on the table end. Of course he would try to sit in the middle of two people for fun. He also was advised to learn guitar playing right handed. He tried golf too. Luckily he found left handed golf clubs at a yard sale. Watching his trials of living as a "lefty" I can relate to yours. Oh yeah...and he was the "perfect son" and could do no wrong in our dad's eyes. Even when he missed the drive-way and drove over the curb drunk one night. : ) Sending Happy Thoughts and Smiles - MJ Avatar: Belief My journey for Balance Subscribe to MJ's Xombytes
