Looking for Extra Writing Work? Check out These Freelance Writing Websites for Jobs!
posted May 18, 2009 - 12:52amThis is a post for all the writers out there--Xombies I'm talking to you.
There are a lot of great writers who post frequently on this site so I thought I would mention a few freelance writing websites that could lead to extra writing jobs for you. If you're looking for some more work, whether it be copywriting or article writing or even just consulting, check out these few websites that I have found to be helpful to writers.
The first site is Freelance Writing Gigs (http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com). This is not only a site with job postings, it also has some very informative articles about the freelance writing lifestyle and how to find freelance gigs. It's run by a writer name Deborah Ng--I've had my eye on this site for a while and can attest that it is a valuable resource.
Deborah does a good job of filtering writing opportunities from various job boards and posting relevant ones from around the web. One thing I will say is that it is perhaps a little too dependent on Craigslist, which isn't a bad thing, and let's be honest it's one of the most popular places to find jobs today. But in my experience, I have never landed a job through the site and have run into more "shady" individuals than I have found good opportunities.
But everyone's experience is different and that's just how it's worked out for me. Definitely check out Freelance Writing Gigs as a place to commence your search for writing jobs.
Another couple of ideas for you are Associated Content, which you may already know about, and Constant Content. I have to admit that I sort of have a love hate relationship with these sites.
It seems to be really hit or miss. You get paid around five bucks per article on AC, but you also get royalties to the tune of $1.5 per thousand views (it varies depending on your "clout" at the site). You can never be certain how well your content is going to do, but of course you can take matters into your own hands and drive traffic to your articles.
If I'm writing for payment and publication on the internet and if I'm only getting five bucks an article, I figure I might as well write somewhere I will be able to have control over editing any time down the line in the future. AC doesn't provide this. Being able to change article keyword density and being able to add links in the text can be very helpful in your online money making ventures.
Constant Content (http://constant-content.com) is a cool website as an idea, but I haven't had too much success with it. But then again I haven't put too much effort into it because I haven't had time. This is a website that brings content buyers and content writers together to buy and sell work. If you take the time to learn how this site works and to build a little bit of a reputation, this may be an option for you. Just like with anything, you need to put in some effort in order to get the rewards. You may be able to make a connection with someone who needs your particular specialty (you know, that subject you can write a 500 word article about in a half hour), which may be very beneficial to you.
HubPages.com is a very nice website where you can write content and post it in very creative ways. You maintain full control over your content and can create links out to other websites if you want to, which can be quite a nice thing to be able to do especially if you have other work to promote.
Hubpages is a very good place to write because you get more traffic a lot quicker than you would in other communities because it has a very high pagerank in Google and the search engines respect the site as a high quality writing website. You can always edit your writing (as you can here) and add links to other sites you own--and you pass along some of the high PR of your pages to your other sites. If you need help getting started with this site, let me know.

Another website where you may find some more freelance opportunities is oDesk.com. You sign up for a free account and fill in your information about your qualifications and what you do. Then you take certain tests through the site that establish how well you understand how the site works. You then bid on jobs or are invited to bid on jobs that fit your particular qualifications. I signed up for this site about two weeks ago and already received on invitation to bid on a job writing SEO content for a website.
Of course, since it was my first time going through the process, I botched the thing and never let the person know I was interested--but you live and you learn. I'll be prepared next time. I think this is a very promising site and will definitely pay dividends after I put some time into it. It's all about effort--but there are so many different places to write and spend you time that you really need to choose a couple and exclude the rest. It's better to get deep into one community than to sort of just be a tourist in four or five.
Good luck finding some extra writing work. Let me know if you have any questions about my experiences with any of these sites.
