Looking up, tonight for meteor showers
posted October 20, 2009 - 11:11pmNormally if you see me looking up at the sky, I'm looking for a satellite. Maybe the space station or space shuttle. A great site to know when satellites are going to above you is www.heavens-above.com. I've seen about 20 satellites so far.
Tonight however, I will be looking for meteorites. I have only seen a couple so far in my life, but in a couple hours I hope to change that. The Orionid Meteor shower begins at 1 am e.s.t and the best time for viewing will be about 6 am e.s.t.
Locally, my forecast from www.accuweather.com says partly cloudy, but maybe with some luck I will be able to see some or lots of meteors. Venus and Mars will also be visible tonight. For a great website to have a guide on what to look for in tonight's sky amazing-space.stsci.edu/tonights_sky/index.php, and click on play movie. Good luck if you are going outside to look for the meteorite showers.
