'lords of the bling.'

Bling: the gleam, shine, design; for some odd reason 'blinging it' has become the craze of not only the British Monarchy but the Ghetto too. It is unmistakably true, that the 'bling bling' fashion is not the trend of the British monarcy alone but it is 'ghetto fabulous'. The 'bling thing' has made its way into Broadway and it has revolutionized our perception about fashion. Now in days if your apparel does not shine or gleam then you 'aint got a thing'. "Bling it" is the motto of the day. If you have a car then 'bling it', if you have a cap add rhinestones and let it bling to infinity and beyond. I must admit that I too at times have been guilty of this fatal 'bling it' attraction. However, their are some of us who don't know where to draw the line. To bling your nipples and other delicate parts of your body is simply beyond reason. As a community helper I would like to offer some advice. We need to have crisis intervention centers within our communities/ neighborhoods/ hoods that specialize in treating patients whom fall victim to the 'bling it' craze. Seriously, some people bling everything even their pets aren't safe. Personally as an animal rights advocate I believe it is cruelty to animals to 'bling' them excessively. On a more serious note, the downside of this 'bling it' craze is this, the hip hop generation has equated 'bling bling' with success. Unfortunately, in many communities especially in the Ghetto there are negative profiles i.e. thugs, gangsta rappers, and drug pushers who pride themselves on 'blinging it'. They portray an image that is suggestive to the immature as meaning 'if you can't beat us join us' and reap the benefits. For example, the thugs or drug pushers drape their bodies in so much 'bling bling' that you can't see the sun for sake of their gleaming gold teeth. They stand outside of cornerstores and crowd street corners publicizing before the nighborhood that they are "lords of the bling". This daily parade seems to lure the opinions of the neighborhood to believe they are rulers in their own rite. Have you ever heard someone in your neighborhood say, "Mikey or Drew owns that block"? We must let the bling bling become a fad by allowing the other details of fashion to evolve and be magnified. For instance, to be punctual for school should be highly fashionable. Or to be neatly dressed should be considered 'decent' not wearing pants that sag off of the buttocks. We must deprogram our children by rehearsing in their ears daily and nightly, "it's not what you put on or robe yourself with that makes you shine but it's what lies in you". Then we need to teach our sons and daughters to respect themselves, each other and their Mothers so they can 'bling'- from within. As intelligent and realistic individuals we must counteract the falacy of the 'bling bling' approach to life. As adults we must mirror an image before our children that educates their mind, body and spirit about fashion. Fashion is the outward portrayal of an inner passion. Through fashion we can evoke change. Community efforts are widely endorsed through Fashion. If we desire to become enlightened in our way of living i.e. customs and traditions, then our fashion perspectives must enhance our point of view not solely our physique. Let's riot the halls of the fashion industry with this message, "to bling or not to bling that is the question but what is the answer"? Lastly to say, here is the answer Fashion should be discreet and subtle too not just 'bling bling'.
