Love Guru, Paris Hilton are Big Winners at 2009 Razzie Awards

Paris Hilton was a one-woman train wreck and Mike Myers stunk up the joint with "The Love Guru" as both of them won three awards at the Golden Raspberry Awards (the "Razzies"), honoring the worst movies and stars.

Hilton managed to cop three acting awards, including worst actress for Hottie & the Nottie" and worst supporting actress awards for "Repo: The Genetic Opera." She was also awarded worst screen couple. And she could be extra proud of "Hottie & the Nottie" - she was executive producer as well as star!

According to CNN, "Hottie & the Nottie" cost $2 million to make, yet earned only $27,000 at the box office. Ouch.

For Mike Myers, the former Saturday Night Live cast member who was once a bankable star for movies like "Wayne's World" and the Austin Powers series, "The Love Guru" represented perhaps a new low in his career. The movie won three Razzies, with Myers proving himself a triple threat with awards for worst actor, worst picture, and worst screenplay.

The Love Guru" must have seemed like a good idea to a lot of people, because Myers managed to attract top-level names like Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, Jim Gaffigan, Stephen Colbert, Oprah Winfrey, Ben Kingsley, Jessica Simpson, and even real-life guru Deepak Chopra to appear in the movie.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" took home the trophy for "worst prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel." Pierce Brosnan won worst supporting actor for his singing in "Mamma Mia."

Agism is alive and well in Hollywood critic's circles

I didn't see the latest Indy sequel, but I have read enough reviews of the movie to understand why it was given consideration for a Razzie. Bottom line: Harrison Ford is old, at least by Hollywood action hero standards. The general consensus was watching Ford and LeBoeuf in this movie was like watching Connery and Ford in the Last Crusade--it's hard to root for an aging hero when you are waiting for him to break his hip on a stunt. Indiana Jones

I'm not sure the Indy movie really belonged in the Razzies. Maybe it was just the only sequel they could find to include in the category. Certainly it doesn't seem to deserve to be included in the same breath as Love Guru and Paris Hilton.

Indy

I actually liked the Indy flick - thought it was entertaining and a lot better than Temple of Doom. Visit my homepage here

Movies not to watch

Yeah, most of them sound like real stinkers (though I know a couple of folks who liked the Indiana Jones flick). Fortunately I borrowed Love Guru from the library, so it didn't cost me a thing to watch (except for the two hours of my life that I'll never get back).

I shall add these movies to my "movies not to watch list"! Thanks. Check out my recent articles!

Bad movies

I saw Love Guru on DVD and it was pretty bad. In fact the only really funny parts of it were a recurring segment with Jim Gaffigan and Stephen Colbert playing feuding sportscasters. I don't own that many movies. I can listen to music 100s of times and still enjoy it, but there are very few movies I really want to see again and again.

A bunch of movies I've never seen...good

There was a time in my life when I might have seen any or all of these movies just because I was bored and in the Navy for ten years. Back in 1987, which was my first full year in uniform, I saw every movie that came out that year literally and some, like Lethal Weapon, over half a dozen times. I guess that is one of the advantages of being married with children and having to change old habits. My wife and I cleaned out all of our videos and quite a few DVD's after our son was born four years ago just because we realized that there were some movies we weren't going to watch anymore with him in the house and we outgrew a lot of the others.
