Magnificent Photos of (Dallas) Cowboys Stadium
posted September 18, 2009 - 4:08pmExcavation on the new Cowboys Stadium began in April 2006 and was finished in 2009.
The Dallas Cowboys aren't the only spectacle to be featured in the new stadium. It also will host concerts, soccer games, college and high school football games, meetings, the 2010 NBA All-Star Game, Super Bowl XLV and the 2014 NCAA Final Four.
Cowboys Stadium seats 80,000 but is expandable to seat up to 100,000. It is the largest domed stadium in the world.
The roof at Cowboys Stadium is retractable.
Although original estimates projected it would take $650 million to build the new stadium, costs ballooned to a final total of over $1.15 billion. The amount was paid for by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, a tax increase in the city of Arlington, City of Arlington bonds (which provided over $933 million in funding) and $150 million from the NFL.
Cowboys Stadium features two steel arches that are nearly 300 feet tall and span the entire length of the dome.
The first regular season NFL game to be played in the new Cowboys Stadium will be the Sunday Night Football game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 20, 2009.
When the Cowboys played their first game at their new stadium -- a preseason game against the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 21, 2009 -- they discovered a potentially recurring problem: the Titans' rookie punter A.J. Trapasso hit the jumbotron on one of his kicks.
The NFL has ruled that any time the football inadvertantly hits the massive, 160-by-72 feet high-definition television screen suspended from the roof, the down will be replayed.
