Major Pollution Source Identified: Animal Poop

There are plenty of man-made causes of pollution, from car exhaust to smokestack emissions to factory waste dumped in streams. But scientists have discovered an unexpected force in despoiling our environment: animal waste from all kinds of critters, including those cutesy ones that add that homey, bucolic touch to our lakes and fields.

As reported recently in the Washington Post, states including Virginia and Maryland have come to the realization that animal waste plays a significant role in water pollution. That local pond you love, for example, is made more beautiful by the geese that frolic in and around it. But those beautiful geese are also constantly taking a dump in the water, contributing to high levels of harmful bacteria.

Another problem is that runoff from manure in pastures and farms ends up in nearby waterways. In some of the studies wildlife was a bigger contributor to water pollution than humans.

And that's not all. Scientists noted years ago that one of the major sources of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is what they technically call "bovine flatulence"–yep, that would be cows farting! And belching. This releases methane, which according to the BBC is 20 times more harmful as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Think about how many cows and steers there are in the world and you can see (if not smell) the magnitude of the problem. Makes sense to me: I've met some humans who were practically farting machines and, unlike cows, they only had one stomach, as opposed to the five a cow has.

So what's the answer–specially made Pampers for geese and cows? Gasmask-style filtering devices to be placed on cows' posteriors? Pooper-scooper laws to make ducks clean up after themselves? Or maybe we can get Robert DeNiro to toilet-train animals as he did with that cat in Meet the Parents...

I [heart] cows

I'm a big fan of bovines, so a world with 90% fewer cattle would bum me out... not to mention my relatives in Vermont; the state's economy is based on dairy and on selling kitschy items with cows on them (which I seem to own a lot of). Soy milk just tastes like utter shyte to me (as opposed to *udder* shyte--sorry, couldn't resist). But I know what you're saying, when I was a teen my mother went through that whole Diet for a Small Planet phase and made us sandwiches with bean sprouts on 'em (looked like friggin' worms!), etc. etc. I seem to remember it took some effort to get enough quality, complete, complementary protein, i.e., combining foods to get the right mix of amino acids.

yeah that's a pic of me, but

yeah that's a pic of me, but from screwing around w/ the pic it's hard to see a) what i look like, and b) that i'm not anemic. as far as protein is concerned, it's very difficult to not get enough protein. you'd have to actively work at it. and finally, vegan isn't necessarily synonymous w/ legumes, but the big point is just that there would be about 90% less cattle on the planet if we were all vegans (or at least vegetarian).

Veganism

...too hard-core for me. I was a vegetarian long ago and that was hard enough, trying to complement foods with different amino acids to get enough protein. Speaking of protein, if that's you hanging on that headstone, I'd say you might need more. ;-) Also, if people switch to veganism they'll be eating a lot more legumes. Aren't we then just replacing cow farts with human ones?

no, veganism is the answer

there wouldn't be so many cow farts if it wasn't for mans insistence on eating hamburgers and steaks. there wouldn't be so much fecal pollution in lakes, rivers and streams if farms didn't create over 89,000 pounds of animal waste per SECOND with no disposal system and no laws governing how the waste should be disposed of. generally, this waste is sprayed over crops or dumped into sewage lagoons, causing run-off. and the waste from these animals is far more deadly than human waste. it's full of chemical contaminants, pesticides, bacteria and parasites.
