Making money in this recession is essential, but where do you begin?
posted December 6, 2008 - 11:31amThe recession is upon us and we can't do anything about it. There are no jobs and even people with degrees are suffering the lack of jobs. So more and more people are turning to home businesses and online ventures.
There is so much online about getting your degree in some field or another. Well I am 33 and was doing absolutely fine until my little girl got sick and I had to choose between being home with her or keeping my job. So I am now a stay at home mom looking for a means to make ends meet.
It is very hard to make money at home. I have fallen for every work at home scheme out there that I could afford to buy. And I think, why can they make $3,000 in a week and I can't even get someone to visit the site that they provided to me.
I have tried affiliate marketing. That is where most of the online millionaires have made their millions. Then they create an ebook to sell to us poor rediculous people who have no idea how to do what they do. Then they make millions more off how they made their millions. And if that's not enough, they make it sound like a second grader could do it. But when you get it and read through it all and then try it, you fail. Are you the 1% that can't make it work? It obviously works because people are dedicated enough to bust their butts to make it work. I honestly believe anything can work if you know what you are doing.
I am a fan of real estate. I am more drawn towards that field than anything else and I was considering taking the course to getting a license but just for the knowledge because I really don't want to work for anyone else. That's the problem.
I watch "Flip This House" and "Property Ladder" religiously. I would love to do what they do and that is why I think the real estate course could help me out. I don't know everything I think people should know before they decide to put all their time and effort, not to mention money, into something so they can make some quick cash. And it amazes me everytime some dumb amateur flipper doesn't listen to the advice given to them. They go over budget and still make a killing at the end. Of course people think they can do it if someone like them could.
I have the "dream team" you need to make this business work. I don't have the cash. And now is the time to get into it. I live in MA so the properties are averaging around 300k. I have a realtor friend who sends the MLS to us daily. One 3 family was selling for 32k, I almost died! If I had the money I would have jumped on it. I was Cosmetic rehab only. Now is the time but now nobody has the money. How ironic.
So I am in the market for an angel. You've heard of them. They give or loan you cash when you need it the most. They are philanthropists. I don't plan on letting this recession pull me down any more. I hope everyone the best in what they do also, but in my lifetime I have never seen anything like this.
Maybe I should have gone to college but at that time I believed it was absolutely possible to succeed without one and I still do. I may not be a walking example of that but they are there. They are all around us. I plan on showing my children that determination and motivation can carry them far but I won't tell them not to go to school to suit my own beliefs. But after reading "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" I realize that if you grow up believing in yourself and knowing that you don't have to work for someone else to be successful, I think I can at the very least instill this in my children if for nothing more than for them to believe in what they do decide to do. I don't want them to go through what I have trying to make ends meet.
I look at my daughter and see the potential for someone great. She has full intentions of being a doctor. Who am I to say no, you have to be your own boss. I would never. But I tell her she can be anything she wants to be. And that's the best advice I could give her in that aspect.
My son is an artist. He wants to be a cartoonist for tv shows when he gets older. A more far fetched goal but I don't tell him that. I tell him he still needs to do well in all subjects in school as well as art. So he attains his goal in art and my goal for him to be smart as well as creative. He gets averages of A's and B's in every class. I haven't seen that for 4 years. If you don't motivate them, then they don't care either.
Give them the advice you wish your parents had given you. I was brought up believing the 9-5 was the answer to security. Well with the hundreds of thousands of lost jobs, how can that be true?
I say go for what makes you happy. I am not a natural writer like some people here on Xomba but I enjoy it and hope some people may benefit from something I might say or comment on. And if I make some money on the side, then all the better.
I wish everyone well in these tough times and can only say don't give up. I know I refuse to.
