Since the foetus depends on all its nutritional needs on the mother, it is the duty of the mother to provice it to her child. But if the mother were to go on a diet, then she would be depriving her child of essential minerals and vitamins. For one, when the mother doesn't supply enough calcium, babies get it from her bones. This is risking the mmother's health. When there is less nutrition, babies are born premature with a low birth weight and an increased risk of spina bifida. The foetus suffers from a number of deficiencies, including iron and neurological ones and also develops respiratory problems. Poor fetal grwoth, low birth weight, premature birth, mental retardation, birth defects and reduced breastfeeding are usually associated with babies born of mothers who are on a strict diet. Lack of iron puts pregnant women at risk of anaemia, which can make them light-headed, irritable and exhausted and in extreme cases, cause heart palpitations. Poor diet and extreme exercise in pregnancy is also linked to a host of problems later in life like heart disease, depression, poor grwoth and cognitive development.
