Manglik or Not ?– The Controversial Mars (Kuja, Chevvai) Dosha in a Vedic Horoscope:- A Personal Perspective

If this question is addressed even to a Vedic Astrologer he/she may not be able to answer the same in a single word of Yes or No. It is because , the assessment of a horoscope to determine whether it is a Manglik chart or not, require time , patience and a thorough analysis of the Horoscope. Further the commercial minded Astrologer community has made such a euphoria of this Vedic astrology term, that the common man is confused, and concerned with this phenomenon. Though I do not claim to be capable of clearing all your doubts on the subject, an earnest attempt is being made by me to present before the inquisitive readers , the plain facts that has been mentioned in the classical texts and either proved or disproved by my own experience from the last 30 years of astrological study and academic research.
At the outset I would like to make it clear that I would not be quoting references from the standard texts here since the basic principles of Manglik dosha or Mars (Kuja) Dosha ,are so well known and unambiguous that there is no need to give the backing of textual references and quotes. Further many of the observations here are based on my personal experience for the past 3 decades.
What is Manglik Dosha?
Normally A person is considered as Manglik when in his/her horoscope Mangal or Mars is placed in any of the following houses counted from either the Ascendant or from the Moon.
Mangal or Mars in First House
Mangal or Mars in Second House
Mangal or Mars in Fourth House
Mangal or Mars in Seventh House
Mangal or Mars in eighth House
Mangal or Mars in Twelfth house
Like any other rules of the universe , this rule is also not without its exceptions. I would discuss the exceptions here at a later stage . First let us understand why Mangal alone is considered as an evil in all these houses and what are the problems triggered by this phenomenon called Manglik?.
The Nature of Mars and its Impact on the Manglik Horoscopes:-
Mars is a fiery planet and a planet of action. It can therefore be considered as good to have this planet strong, wherever dynamism, quick action, boldness, etc. are required. A person with a weak Mars may be devoid of energy and quick response to situations. He/she may also be a bit coward, shy and passive in his/her actions. Naturally warriors, Kings, Police personnel, martial arts expert all need to have a good mars in their horoscope. However a strong Mars misplaced in the horoscope would bring disaster by means of over action, impulsiveness and reckless actions uncalled for. The houses indicating marriage, love, family, conjugal life all come under this category since all these areas require patience, accommodation, and compassion to make the conjugal life happy and trouble free. Therefore, Mars in any of these houses would trigger problems in related areas by means of one’s own impulsive and reckless behaviour .
The next question is whether Mars in any of these houses affect only the behaviour and attitude of the individual? Or whether it has any other effect on the life of the individual? This of course is a difficult question to answer since I may not be able to give a scientific reply as many an incident that has been observed in the conjugal life of couples having Manglik dosha were not only of the behavioural or attitudinal problems but also something completely different, being impersonal and beyond reasoning . The author however believes that there may be a reasoning and scientific explanation for the same, yet to be explored. The effect of Manglik dosha in the life of couples who do not have proper Manglik matching includes sudden tragic incidents like fatal accidents, unexpected deaths and terminal illness observed either immediately after the marriage, or when the main or sub period of Mars operates , which is no way connected to the behaviour or attitude of the individual. Much research needs to be made in this area to find out the reasons for such strange and unexplainable incidents.
The Effect of a Weak Mars in the Manglik horoscopes :-
Though Mars engineers the tragic incidents connected to the marital life of the individuals in Manglik horoscopes , it is also the planet that decides the Libido in females. A weak Mars in the horoscope of the females indicates menstrual complaints and problems related to conception and pregnancy. Hence a weak mars or ill placed Mars is not the solution for the Manglik dosha rather it would only aggravate the problem should the planet be placed in any one of the above mentioned houses. A natural question would be whether the doshas (Ill effects) could be remedied by strengthening such a Mars in a Manglik horoscope? Un fortunately the answer is an emphatic “NO”.As per the Vedic principles one can never make a functional malefic planet behave the desired ways by means of strengthening the same. However the author has seen many an individual strengthening such a Mars by means of gems and crystals to get relieved of the malefic effect of the planet. I would like to caution all of them that they would be doing a wrong remedy in such a situation since only propitiations such as donations, charity, Havana, worship of the planet , its presiding deities etc. could save them and not by adding power to one who has been assigned the duty to give the result of one’s past negative Karmas.
The Effect of a Strong Mars in the Horoscope of a Manglik:-
Contrary to the above principle, A strong Mars in the horoscope of an individual who is a Manglik has something to cheer up. Mars when strong in a horoscope in any of the Manglik houses instead of aggravating the Doshas would only reduce the problem though manifestation of the trouble cannot be completely avoided. Mars being strong, there is no need to make it strong further and worship in the manner prescribed in the foregoing paragraph would suffice.
Exceptions to the Rule of Manglik:-
Of late an attempt is being made to pacify the Mangliks by bringing in the theory of Manglik exceptions, some of which even owe to some popular standard texts. As per these exceptions, the following horoscopes are supposed to be free from the Manglik dosha.
1) People born in Cancer Lagna or Cancer Moon sign with Mars in either 7th or 8th or in any of the houses mentioned elsewhere in this article that constitute Manglik dosha.
2) People born in Leo Lagna or Leo Moon sign with Mars in either 7th or 8th or in any of the houses mentioned elsewhere in this article that constitute Manglik dosha.
3) People born in Aries Lagna or Aries Moon sign
4) People born in Scorpio Lagna or Scorpio Moon sign
5) People with Mars in Cancer, Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn.
While it is true that all these houses has some significance to the planet Mars by means of its , own , exaltation , or debilitation sign or Mars being Yogakaraka( Natural Benefic) for the respective Ascendants or Moon sign. While it may be true that any one of the above combinations may reduce the effect of Manglik dosha , I have observed that Mars in all these houses or for all these Ascendants or Moon signs has done enough irreparable damage. As such one cannot have a sigh of relief just because one has any one of the above combinations. People with any of the above combinations or placements of Mars, are therefore advised to take the Manglik dosha seriously and act accordingly. Many an eye brow may be raised when I make such a sweeping comment against the combined wisdom of many a reputed scholars, but I would like to make it clear to my readers that this has the backing of my thirty years of professional experience and research. Due to paucity of time and space and the article being intended for the common reader ,I am not reproducing the famous horoscopes that prove my point.
What is the Real exception? Who can Pacify Mars?
Then the next question is whether there are any exception to the rule of Manglik? Yes there are exceptions. Mars the fiery planet get pacified with the association of the cold Moon . In that sense if Mars is placed in either Cancer sign or with the waxing moon in any of the houses the Manglik dosha gets neutralised to a great extend. As a matter of rule in Kerala Astrology , Moon is considered to suck the power of any planet associated with it.
Another planet to pacify the fiery Mars is the best of all benific Jupiter. If Mars is associated with Jupiter either by conjunction or aspect the Manglik dosha gets neutralised and many tragedies are averted. Barring these rules ,Manglik doshas are to be seen with its seriousness and horoscope matching needs to be given due importance.
Does A Manglik horoscope neutralizes the Dosha (Evil) of another Manglik horoscope in Match Making?
This fact is well known to everyone that the best way to neutralises the ill effects of Manglik dosha is to match the same with another Mangalik horoscope. It is easier said than done. First and foremost all manglik horoscopes are not equal in dosha and matching( Equality of ill effects or strength of Doshas). Matching of horoscopes with unequal doshas or horoscopes with different manglik strength would invite disaster as it is no match making at all. The horoscopes need to match perfectly in doshas (Ill effects of Mars) should one need to ensure the match making works. The system of matching the horoscopes whether of a manglik or with other doshas is beyond the scope of this write up and as such I would deal with the same at a later date.
Though it is beyond logical reasoning that two Manglik horoscopes if matched properly could produce a trouble free married life, the experience and the wise words of the masters support this point. How can a Manglik horoscope that indicates unhappy conjugal life gets freed from the karmic influence by means of joining with another person of similar karma is a point to be thought of . In other words a similar explanation would have to be found even for a Vipareetha Rajayoga where the fall of a planet who owns a bad house results in good results. In this case I have observed though the subject may have the benefit of the Vipareetha Rajayoga such as position, and power , He/ She may be devoid of the benefits of all the matters indicated by the planet in question. Similarly even in manglik horoscopes, by proper matching of the horoscopes one maybe able to avoid the tragedies in married life however in my opinion they may not be compared with the horoscopes having benefic influences on the house of marriage. This is another aspect that requires the attention of the research astrologers.
