As fate would have it, while giving birth to their last child (the fourteenth), Mumtaz Mahal died due to some complications. Shah Jahan was so heartbroken after her death that he ordered the court into morning for two years.

After her death, Shah Jahan undertook the task of erecting the world's most beautiful monument in the memory of his beloved. It took 22 years and the labor of 22,000 workers to construct the monument. Folklore has it that on her death bed, as her last wish, Mumtaz Mahal secured a promise from Shah Jahan that he would construct the most beautiful monument in the her memory. Thus were sown the seeds for the erection of a great structure.
