Marie Antoinette Part II-Marriage to Louis-Auguste
posted December 24, 2006 - 5:13pmAfter meeting her future Grandfather-in-law and the Royal family, Marie was introduced to her future husband, Louis-Auguste. Louis was only 15 years old at the time. He was very shy and inexperienced, therefore he had no idea how to treat his new fiancee.
Marie and Louis were married within hours
of her arrival at Versailles on May 16, 1770, with a Wedding Mass celebrated in the Chapelle Royale in front of the court.
Marie was presented with a magnificent collection of jewels & gems. She also recieved a diamond-encrusted fan from King Louis.
Marie's dress was decorated by large white hoops covered in diamonds and pearls. A formal dinner followed the ceremony. Then the couple were taken to their bed chamber, however the marriage was not consumated for several years. (This is strange to comprehend taking into consideration today's 15 year olds and their knowledge of sex.)
Marie did not concieve until seven years into her marriage. This brought about many rumors and accusations about the royal marriage.
Marie's life was pretty much routine from day to day. She was assisted out of bed every morning by various ladies-in-waitng. Dinners with her husband were held in public. She seemed to feel as if her life was viewed by the whole world.
Marie became very homesick and missed the companionship she had had with her sister at home. She finally found substitutes in the royal family.
Marie didn't involve herself in politics because she had no interest or understanding of them. This frustrated her mother who wanted her to further Austria's influence on France.(Talk about using your children, no wonder she was so sad.)
