Legal Marijuana in Massachusetts for the Masses
posted December 30, 2008 - 6:04amMassachusetts has decriminalized THC! I thought California would have done this way before any other state. The new rule says that it is legal to have up to an ounce of marijuana. Actually, not just marijuana, but any substance that contains THC.
The law takes effect Friday and after that if you are caught with OVER an ounce you will only receive a $100 fine and have to give up what you have in your possession. It doesn't get put on your record, you don't go to jail, $100 fine and that's it.
It's still illegal to distribute marijuana or drive under the influence as the previous laws state. The guidelines in the law also allow cities and towns to pass bylaws making public use of the drugs illegal.
So if I'm not mistaking...after the law goes into effect on Friday, and before certain cities create bylaws, people can legally walk around Massachusetts smoking weed? I predict a slow hippy spike in tourism!
I can't believe I haven't heard anything about this until tonight. I didn't think any states were headed this far in the direction of legalizing marijuana.
I think it is a smart move though. None violent drug offenses shouldn't be eating up my tax dollars. Anybody that I've ever met using cannabis related substances has been way more laughable than violent or a danger to society.
