Marine Corps Commandant Wants More Marines in Afghanistan
posted August 23, 2008 - 1:30pm Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Conway visited with some of the 3400 U.S. Marines deployed to Afghanistan last week.
While talking with Marines stationed at Baghram Air Base, General Conway said "There's not much enemy left in Iraq but there's plenty of enemy here to be dealt with." In comparisn, he also explained to a Newsweek reporter traveling with him that "On average, you've got three attacks a day in Anbar Province. It used to be several hundred a day." (There are some 24000 Marines in Iraq.)
Until U.S. Marines can draw down some of their strength in Iraq, The Corps' numbers cannot support increased efforts in Afghanistan.
As attacks slow in Iraq, recent months in Afghanistan have seen the highest numbers of military casualties since the war began in 2001 and July ws the first month that the casualty rate surpassed that of Iraq since combat operations started there in 2003.
