Masks of Society
posted August 2, 2009 - 10:56amPersona, "outward or social personality" is the mask we put on when we go to work, to our children's events and even the mask we wear with our friends. This mask is used for many reasons and we all have reasons in common and other personal
reasons for our masks. The most common reason is: projection of who we want others to believe we are, other reasons are, protection of self, and even hiding from self.
Some people are so image oriented that they believe the mask they wear is the person they are and believe there is no need to go deeper, to look beneath the mask. Think about a child who can't find their shoes because they really don't want to put on shoes or go somewhere. "I can't find them!" Mom goes in, lifts up a shirt, "Sometimes you have to look under things to find what you are looking for." But as with a child who "doesn't want to" as adults, we have areas of "I don't want to". It is easier to pretend who we portray in society is who we are than to make the effort of looking under the mask.
Now, I'm not a psychologist or anything like that, I am "Jane Common" who has and is experiencing life as a human. I admit to having a social mask and a personal mask for at home, I also have a family mask for when I visit my brother and sister. These masks may appear differently in execution, but represent the same thing, they represent what I believe those around me want to see, believe, and hear. They also represent what I want those to believe about me. However, when I unmask myself in private, when I am alone with the Spirit, this is when I realize and understand that the masks are of make believe. When I am with the Spirit, I do not need to make believe, the Spirit knows my spirit, they are one of the same. The human experience is what the mask is for. We need to remember to remove the masks from time to time to ease the chaos and find balance.
It is important that we understand that the persona we project to society is not of spirit, but of ego. In fact, these masks are a disconnection with Spirit. We are choosing to fit in with those around us instead of connecting with the Spirit and the spirit of others. We rather connect in social expectations and standings. My journey is the connection with the Spirit within myself and the Spirits in the outer universe, the Creation Spirit and the created spirits. Without this connection, there is chaos.
In my spirituality quest, I have realized that spirituality is a daily implementation and exploration of balancing the energies of the moment within and without. Spirituality is not just a statement of "Eureka, I have found it, I am done."
I have also realized that we must also experience "blah" times and times of chaos in order to help our spirit connection. It is at these times that we seek harder and look deeper for the Spirit. We humans have a habit of taking things for granted when "all is good" and tend to forget the Spirit connection and energy aides that have brought about the "good". That is usually when things tend to start going "bad" or in the opposite direction and the chaos begins again. The balancing of the energies is once again needed. Lift the mask, search deeper, and find the balance, connect.

Balance
Thank you Mia, I like writing about it and the things I discover in the Journey to balance. It helps remind me too!
I think it is a slippery slope for everyone. It takes constant effort to stay balanced and sometime life gets in the way. We forget to take that step back and regroup, breath, take off the mask.
