McCain, Obama Plan Joint Appearance at Ground Zero on 9/11
posted September 6, 2008 - 3:57pmJohn McCain and Barack Obama will take a day off campaigning on Thursday, Sept. 11 to make a show of unity on the seventh anniversary on the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01.
Terrorists on that day commandeered commercial airliners and crashed them into the two World Trade Center towers in Lower Manhattan and into the Pentagon. Another plane headed for Washington, D.C. crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania when passengers overpowered the terrorists.
Both McCain and Obama had previously said they would not run campaign ads critical of each other on Sept. 11th.
“All of us came together on 9/11 — not as Democrats or Republicans — but as Americans,” read a joint statement by the Democratic and Republican presidential nominees. “We were united as one American family. On Thursday, we will put aside politics and come together to renew that unity.”
