McCain Suspends Campaign; Urges Delay of Friday's Debate

Republican presidential candidate John McCain announced Wednesday that he is suspending his campaign after an upcoming appearance and is returning to Washington to help work on the financial crisis. McCain is urging Democratic nominee Barack Obama to suspend his campaign too, and he has also called for Friday's presidential debate to be postponed.

Obama, who says his campaign has spoken to McCain's, says he plans to continue preparing for the debate and as of now is expecting to participate in it. Friday's debate, to take place in Mississippi, is the first scheduled head-to-head debate between the two. Obama has said that in light of the financial crisis, it's important for voters to hear the differences between the two candidates' positions and ideas.

Obama has said that he'll join McCain in Washington if it it will help with the negotiations over the financial rescue package proposed last week by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. The package has been greeted with skepticism by members of both parties in Congress.

I don't doubt it

I'm not saying Obama is any better in terms of who he chooses to advise him. I still find it interesting that the McCain campaign and right-wing talking heads are trying to tie Obama to Franklin Raines, late of Fannie Mae, even today Sean Hannity claimed that Raines was Obama's "chief" economic advisor. Even members of Congress are calling McCain's decision to put the campaign on hold a political move, primarily because either McCain or Obama are going to be elected president in 40 days and a president should be able to multitask. Plus, both Obama's and McCain's presence many actually interfere with the process because both men are running for office in the Executive Branch and there is little or no way for them to participate without injecting politics into the equation. Attendance

Let's face it, senators who run for president have lousy attendance records. One of the non-partisan organizations ranked Obama's Senate attendance at the bottom level. H. Clinton was better, but not by much. Obama's campaign gets lots of money from Wall St and insurance companies, too, and his chief financial advisor is a former Goldman Sachs chairman. I don't seen a whole lot for either campaign to crow about in terms of ties to these industries.

I'm sorry, Idle, McCain shaming other Senators is pretty funny

During this current session of Congress, John McCain has skipped more votes than any other senator except Tim Johnson and Johnson had brain surgery. Source: Washington Post Votes Database/Missed Votes I find it curious that McCain has picked now of all times to finally show up for work. If he is going to shame anybody, it should be himself for helping create the current financial mess with what he and Phil Gramm did in 1999 to end government regulation of Wall Street. Plus, he did pack his campaign advisors with people who were prime players in Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and AIG. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Financial problems

He has a good record of working with people from different parties, like co-sponsoring bills with Kennedy, Feingold, etc., so he does have something to offer. I'm not sure economic expertise is what's needed to get a bill done (and I'm not convinced Obama has any great financial wisdom, either). If McCain offering to stay in D.C. shames his fellow Congressman to delay their recess until a financial solution gets worked out, that's fine with me.

Well said.

This is such an obvious political move. I mean, he's making it sound like they can suspend the campaign for a few days and fix the economy like it's a leaky faucet. Is he really that dumb, or does he just think we are?

What can McCain possibly contribute to the discussion?

He admits that he has no clue at all about the economy. None. Nada. Zip. His former campaign advisor, Phil Gramm, said that the economic problems were all in our heads and that we are a bunch of whiners. This begs the question: what can John "1+1=3" McCain possibly contribute to the discussion to "fix" the economy? It would probably be closer to the truth to say that McCain isn't looking forward to having to debate Obama because most debates are live and Obama can call him on his B.S. right away. The McCain campaign has subsisted to now by outright lies, half-truths, and innuendo, very little of which has been directly challenged by the mainstream media. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?
