Media Overkill Coverage of Michael Jackson's Death
posted June 28, 2009 - 6:39pmThe unexpected death of pop superstar Michael Jackson was a massive international news story. No doubt about it and a story demanding immediate initial coverage. But when is enough enough? Haven't you the average viewer had enough of Michael Jackson after learning the pertinent facts? Or are you actually spellbound in front of the television watching hour upon hour of Michael Jackson coverage which the media insists you do.
The onslaught has been all the worse in Los Angeles where Jackson died. Once the announcement hit, all network and local channels including Spanish language went wall to wall Michael Jackson with cable channel CNN, Fox News, CNBC and MSNBC plus BBC News on PBS following suit as the frenzy ensued. Okay, that was understandable during that first day, a Thursady.
But it has gone on and on and on. The following days have seen every news telecast dominated by Jackson and all there is rehashing, repetition and speculation. Nothing new of substance. The Los Angeles media whipped the local population into hysteria as almost immediately thousands descended on the hospital where Jackson's body was sent and rented house where he died. Then they thronged the Jackson family compound in Encino. The scene at Jackson's star in the walk on Hollywood Boulevard is so chaotic that there are police and barricades.
The media continues milking those scenes. C'mon people, what is the matter with you? It is okay to be sad at the passing of a popular entertaining but to behave as though the world has come to an end and don't you have better things to do than hang around those places? Expressing condolences, bull! It is desperate attention seeking people hoping to get on television which is exactly what the media wants to exploit.
On Friday evening, Larry King Live featured a tribute show. The editions of the O'Reilly Factor, Hannity and On the Record on Fox News focused on Jackson. Together specials and rebroadcast every inch of Jackson footage in the vaults. Although devoting less time, the news channels continuing hammering away.
There is no new important information offered! All there is are replaying the same images over and over rehashing for the millionth time every aspect of Jackson's very public life and wild speculation. There are countless and mainly pointless interviews with those claiming to know Jackson, worked with Jackson, had vague connections with Jackson and even more who had no connection whatsoever with the man.
Every Hollywood insider and observer has chipped in. Those having written books on Jackson have surfaced smelling sales. Media hogs like Rev. Al Sharpton and attorney Gloria Allred jumped on the Jackson bandwagon to put in their two cents. Much celebrity reaction. Do you care that actor Joe Pesci alleges to have been friends with Jackson? Or what country singer Naomi Judd thinks? Even Congress and President Obama have gotten in on the action.
Has the media gone overboard in ramming this story down our throats or are people this insanely obsessed with Michael Jackson? By the way, what is with the people burning up the internet buying Jackson's music? If you were such big Jackson fans, how come you did not already have his music?
The man died. It was a big story on Thursday. It is over. There is no story at the moment nor will there be until the autopsy results are revealed.
This is another example of the media beating a news story to death and whipping people into a senseless frenzy. Don't you get tired of being inundated by a single story for hours and days on end at a time?
Aren't there more pressing issues for the media and population to dwell upon rather than the days old death of a washed up singer?
