Medicianal Herbs and Spices and Uses
posted October 30, 2008 - 2:42pmThere have been people who have used the herbs of the fields for food and healing since the beginning of mankind, Even animals seek out certain herbal sources when they feel uncomfortable or ill. My dad and grandmother were very big in to going into the woods, and fields and collecting different plants for medicinal usage and taking them home, cleaning and drying them for later use as needed.
Some of the plants I used that I have found to effectively work are as follows, This however is in no means an excuse to not seek out medical professional help from a medical doctor or naturopath should your condition worsen or not improve within 4-5 days.
Some things can be found in your kitchen cupboards. For example Cinnamon, Which can be used for freshing your breath and is very good in a hot tea like drink and helps with menstrual cramping.
Cloves can be used to help a toothache and to help with sore gums in teething babies if gently rubbed on the gums but diluted with water.
Stomach Ailments such as gas or indigestion; Teas of thyme, mint, or chamomile were used to settle things.
Baking soda a spoonful stirred into a glass of warm water and drunk slowly can be used to help with heartburn and gas. It can also be used to freshen your breath and clean your teeth
Garlic and Parsley help to lower high blood pressure.
Peppermint steeped in a glass of warm water and with a little sweetener is good for colicky babies and again is a good breath freshener if chewed. It is a stress reliever when drunk in a hot tea.
Licorice is a good diuretic in for water retention drunk in a tea.
Catnip is a relaxer and helps to relieve stress. For babies with colic and to sooth nerves
Mullein dried flowers or leaves are good for fevers and chills, it is also used as an analgesic and an antihistamine, steeped in olive oil put a few drops warm into the ear canal for earache.
Red clover used as a poultice helps with inflammation to help draw out splinters or other infected wounds, It is also very good for skin aliments applied to the skin for things like eczema and psoriasis
Regular black tea boiled up into a deep dark tea and let to cool can be used to help a deep sunburn by applying cool clothes soaked in the mixture to the burn, this needs to be repeated every few minutes but it does help draw out the heat and burn, it may take an hour of applying the cool tea soaked clothes to the burn to ease the pain.
Wild cherry bark a handful of it steeped into a dark red hot tea and sweetened with honey is very good or a raw sore throat and cough
Oregon grape root has natural quinine and it can be taken in a warm tea two or three roots boiled to make a yellow tea, sweeten with honey helps leg cramps, and is very good for high fevers and influenza or malaria.
Lavender along with Valerian Root is used for inducing sleep and soothing the mind and soul. It helps in calming nerves
Yarrow is used in colds, fever, cramps and toothaches, steep a handful of leaves and flowers in quart of water.
Echinacea can be used to shorten the relieve intensity and shorten the duration of colds and flu. When applied directly to the skin, echinacea can be used to speed the healing of wounds. It can also be used to control infections of the urinary tract.
Grated nutmeg soothes digestive upsets and chronic diarrhea. Use the oil in massage rubs for rheumatic pains and aches, muscles strain or during labor. Substitute for sage oil to relieve toothaches. Do not use in high doses as it can cause convulsions.
Hot onions are used for colds. They promote sweating and reduce fever. Plain onions are also used for insect stings and warts. Just apply them raw straight onto the wart or insect bite.
Blackberries in addition to being used for jams and jellies and in pies. the roots and leaves help with dysentery and diarrhea and upset stomach, We knew a family years ago that had stomach flu and diarrhea they had a six month old baby who was very sick and none of them could keep anything down or it would go through them. They had gone to the doctors and the medication the doctors gave them did nothing to help it made it worse. My grandma on hearing of the baby being very listless and the parents were afraid he might die if they could not stop the diarrhea. She sent us with a quart jar of blackberries, and Knox gelitain to eat and blackberry root to be made into tea to drink with honey. Within two days the whole family was totally cured and well.
Aloe vera is an extremely useful herb; it can be used to regenerate tissue, clear the throat, clean the colon, expell worms, promote menstruation, and clean out the digestive organs. Aloe can regenerate tissue rapidly and well, and so it can be applied to burns, including radiation burns, and cuts and bruises. It can also be used to clear the throat, making it useful for singers and public speakers. Aloe Vera is excellent for correcting digestive disturbances, can be used to clean the colon, stomach, liver, spleen, kidneys, and bladder. It can also promote menusturation. Another use for aloe is to get rid of worms, but it takes several doses of aloe to do this. I personally keep a gallon on hand in my fridge for many uses.
The dandelion is full of nutritious vitamins and can be cooked up to eat as greens or put in salads, And can be used as a blood purifier, for constipation and inflammatory skin conditions
Green tea is known to help prevent tooth decay and to help strengthen the immune system. Green tea is also good for cuts and scrapes. Apply green tea bags directly to the cut or scrape, which will stop the bleeding. Green tea is also good to soothe insect bites. Recently it has been found to aide in weight loss.
St. Johns Wort tea is very good for anemia, headaches, jaundice, feminine pains and difficulties, and chest congestion. If you take the herb internally, it acts as a pain reliever. It is famous as an anti-depressant. Mixed with oil and beeswax it makes a soothing ointment when applied to minor burns, cuts and scrapes
Oolong tea is good for reducing cholesterol and improve digestion.
Horsetail weeds are very good steeped in a tea, let to cool and drunk cold it helps with deep bronchial coughs and pneumonia.
Rosemary is a tonic, stimulant nervine, and a circulatory and heart tonic herb. It is also an antibacterial, antiseptic, antidepressant.
Elderberry flowers help with a cough and bronchitis as well steeping the two together helps greatly in soothing the bronchial tubes and congestion
Basil is used mainly in teas. The leaves are used to brew the tea. Hot basil teas are good for nausea, gas pains, dysentry, and correcting suppressed menstruation. Peppercorn and basil tea is used to reduce fever.
Anise is generally used for digestive disturbances such as colic, nausea, problems caused by overeating, and aids digestion. It also prevents fermentation of gas.
Stinging Nettle seeds mixed with bayberries, and honey was used for rheumatism and stiff joints
Cabbage's key actions are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and a liver restorative. Cabbage (both red and white) is used for many problems including acne, digestive problems and chest infections.Cabbage is good for migraines, water retention, and mastitis. It is also very good for arthritis.
Pumpkin seeds, dried and lightly salted are good for animals or people with pin worms.
Corn silk dried and steeped in a quart of water helps to flush the kidneys and for a kidney infection or bladder infection. Asparagus is another good food or herb that helps with kidney ailments
I could go on and on with many more medicinal herbs of the wood and field and or things you can find in your kitchen cupboard for ailments, aches and pains but I think I will end here and may at another time add others.
