Meet Sarah Palin, Russia National Security Expert

Meet Sarah Palin, Russia National Security Expert

One of the most endearing aspects of a presidential campaign are the airy, far-fetched claims made by candidates and their wives, in the absence of genuine qualifications, in order to win over voters. Case in point: Cindy McCain defended the lack of experience in national security matters of her husband†s running mate, Alaska governor Sarah Palin, by saying: "Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. So, it's not as if she doesn't understand what's at stake here. It's also about making decisions and be targeted (sic) in what she thinks. She has a great mind. And she has a very serious direction in where she goes (sic)."

Really? I’ll overlook the fact that the second half of the quote is just hot air and bad grammar (what can you expect from a beer heiress and former rodeo queen?), and just consider the first part. Following Cindy’s impeccable reasoning, the governor of Florida knows all about national security because of the presence of Cuba just 90 miles away. And the governors of the states that border Mexico automatically understand what’s at stake regarding this serious issue (my governor, Bill Richardson, actually does have experience in this area, but only because he’s served in national office and at the UN). And let’s not forget the governors of all the northern states that are contiguous with Canada, who can, by Cindy McCain’s reasoning, easily deal with this issue also.

Who knows, national security may not be all that hard to get up to snuff on, and Palin could be a quick study and prove able to handle it. On national issues, she’s an unknown quantity at this point and we’ll learn more about her “great mind” at the Veep debates (although I’m afraid Joe Biden will pull his punches because, well, she is who she is). But not to worry. It’s clear that the real reason she’s been chosen as the Republican vice presidential candidate is not because of her supposed expertise about Russia, but for her bright and shining evangelical credentials, which McCain notably lacks. And evangelicals, of course, are obsessed with so-called “family values”, a rotten-smelling political package that includes hating gays and opposing reproductive freedom for women.

The Rapture Right would never quibble over a tiny detail like Palin’s spectacular lack of experience on almost all national issues, not just national security, or that she would literally be a heartbeat away from the presidency. She’s anti-choice. She’s anti-gay marriage. She goes to church on Sunday and believes in Armageddon. That’s what really counts to these people.

Fasten your seatbelts, folks. It's going to be a rocky road.

veghead... Since Kucinich

veghead... Since Kucinich has not been in the race since it began and seeing as how you are adamantly against the Republican ticket, that would leave you with the "preferred" candidate of Barack Obama. Are you not going to support him? Even if he is the "lesser of two evils," you are still choosing him over McCain. That makes you an Obama supporter. Not that it matters anyway...the argument was the fact (I know how you hate to discuss those) that Obama has less relevant experience than Palin when it comes to running the executive branch of our federal government. You failed to address this fact and instead chose to argue about whether or not you were a "supporter" of Obama or just choosing him by default. I will take that as a concession to the argument I made about his experience. *If you're interested in reading my articles, Click Here.

Personal politics

Seems like you (veghead) and lmorovan are just using this particular teen pregnancy as a tool to further your opposing political agendas. You blame the conservatives and lmorovan blames the democrats. Did any of you ask the girl? Why does people's (especially politicians) personal affairs seem to be such a big part of the political debates in USA? especially around election times. Furthermore what are the indications that this particular teen pregnancy is necessarily a problem? Are teen pregnancies automatically problematic?

Some people lie habitually

Are you one of them? Show me one post or comment where I claim to support President Bush or VP Dick Cheney. On the other side, I feel very comfortable with honest and sincere candidate who will not hide a family "problem" to impress voters. Had Obama been in the same situation, he would have had his daughter abort the child and hide the truth from the media and the American people. After all, what else can you expect from a wicked candidate who, still as of today, cannot produce a verifiable certificate of birth as an American citizen, making his candidacy invalid and illegal. Not to mention a "candidate" who seem to be embarrassed to place his hand on his heart, as any country loving American would do, when the National Hymn is played in public. Typical hypocritical statement

If you father were a drunkard, would you hate your father because he is a drunkard? Or you would love your father but hate his destructive habit. If you have a brother who is a drug addict, would you hate him, or love him and hate his destructive habit? Would you love them enough as to do whatever you can to free them from their bad habits? McCain's beauty and charm

OK, so he chose her for her physical attributes, to make up for his lack of same, not her "great mind". At least I understand now!

Idle, Idle, Idle

Just when I thought you got it. Bristol is stuck in a family that doesn't allow sex education or birth control for teenagers, and this has been the sad result: an unwanted pregnancy and shotgun marriage of a kid who's only seventeen. How do you get loving and supportive family out of that? Read my next article for more, please. Interestingly, Sarah Palin herself apparently also "had" to get married, eight months before she had her first child.

She's a "maverick", after all, Idlewild

So she gets to (claim to) have gay friends but also reject the idea of their marrying. What kind of self-respecting gay would hang out with somebody like her? I'm not a big fan of the institution of marriage, but every consenting adult should have that right, in this so-called free country of ours. Weird!

Dysfunctional family?

"especially the revelations that have come out about her highly dysfunctional family this weekend." I don't consider a pregnant teen daughter to be the sign of a "dysfunctional family." It happens all the time, in all kinds of families. The girl is lucky to have what seems like a loving and supportive family.

So she's same sex marriage for insects?

Sounds good to me. Small joke, Elmor. Tee hee.

Wrong, publius. Again.

I am not a Barack Obama supporter, but I believe he's the lesser of two evils and his savvy choice of running mate is far superior to McCain's because, as he's stated, he was looking for someone who would challenge him, not just be a cynical political appointment and his yes-man (or woman, as the case may be). As you may recall, I support Kucinich. But thanks for your always thoughtful thoughts!
