Megan Meier - A Real Person A Real Death

Few kids are strangers to MySpace. Just browse through the site and you'll see the deep level of involvement. One young teenage girl's involvement was deep enough for her to commit suicide. That girl was Megan Meier. She is real. Her life was real. The person who caused her to go over the edge, Josh Evans, was make believe. He has no life. He was the creation of an adult woman who acted more on the age level of the girl who died than that of an adult.

This story is so tragic, so heart rending, that it's hard to read. Megan's parents are now in the midst of a divorce. Perhaps they were planning on divorce prior to Megan's death. Perhaps disharmony in the home was the major event which caused Megan to kill herself and the Josh Evans event was just the final blow. It almost seems that there had to be something else going on in Megan's life.

No one really knows what was in Megan Meier's heart and her head on the day she killed herself. We do not know if the family issues were at the foundation of her distress or if she was so enamored with the fictitious Josh Evans she could not get over him.

Before the days of the internet and of MySpace, teenagers committed suicides over real life break-ups. Now they kill themselves over make believe characters which appear all too real in their lives.
