Memorable Television Couples Through the Years

Ralph and Alice Kramden - Today, their relationship would be considered, "dysfunctional", but the point of The Honeymooners was that they loved each other anyway.

George Burns and Gracie Allen - This real-life couple played a couple on tv, and people loved them.

Lucy and Ricky: This I Love Lucy couple was mostly famous because Lucy was funny, but her attractive, easily flustered, spouse established them as a couple.

Fred and Ethel: It wouldn't be fair not to include I Love Lucy Couple Number 2. He was sarcastic. She was wry. They made us laugh every bit as much as Lucy and Ricky did - maybe more.

George and Marion Kerby - Killed in an avalanche and returned as ghosts, complicating the life of their former butler, Topper. That's memorable.

Pete and the Invisible Gladys - As the neighbor in December Bride, Pete Porter's never-seen wife, Gladys, made Pete and Gladys a memorable couple. When Gladys showed up in the spin-off, Pete and Gladys, the couple became less memorable.

Rob and Laura Petrie - The Dick Van Dyke show's Rob and Laura were attractive and young. They were also funny, but not in a Lucy and Ricky kind of way. Laura's perfect flip (the most long for hairdo of the 60's) made her particularly admirable.

Ward and June Cleaver - Whenever someone wants an example of an unrealistic couple, poor Ward and June get brought up. June may be more memorable because of her perfectly styled hair and perfectly ironed dresses, but Ward's calm wisdom helps make this couple memorable.

Samantha and The Old Darren - While The New Darren was never a very memorable spouse for Samantha of Bewitched, The Old Darren and Samantha made the perfect couple. Yet another easily flustered male half of the couple, Darren's good heart and love for Samantha earned them a place on the list.

Wilma and Fred - The cartoon version of The Honeymooners, Wilma and Fred Flintstone really had a kind of dysfunctional relationship; but, as with Ralph and Alice, they loved each other anyway. (Barney and Betty - not that memorable.)

Ann and Donald - That Girl's, Ann Marie, and her ever frazzled (but cute enough) fiance, Donald, made a cute couple. This is another couple that may have earned a place on the list as result of the female character's perfect flip hairdo.

Felix and Oscar, The Odd Couple - No, they're weren't a "couple" really, but the title of their show earned them a place on the list. They were very, very, memorable.

Jonathan and Jennifer Hart - Hart to Hart's Jonathan and Jennifer mixed a glamorous lifestyle with shared investigative work. Jennifer's outfits and great looks made this clever couple memorable.

Edith and Archie Bunker - Predecessors to Marge and Home Simpson, this 1970's couple had their hint of dysfunction but, like so many other imperfect tv couples, loved each other.

Charlie Brown and The Little Red Haired Girl - Oh the perfect romance of it all. These two should be Number 1.

Luke and Laura - General Hospital's Luke and Laura are memorable, although not necessarily in the best of ways. These two managed to convince the viewing public that their romance was beautiful, even though it began with a violent attack. Memorable for the publicity they got. Memorable for their ability to re-write their characters' character.

George and Louise ("Weezie") Jefferson - They didn't show a shred of romance between them, and we don't why we know, but these two folks loved each other. He's memorable for how he made us laugh with obnoxious personality. She, for the fact that she put up with him.

Pam and Bobbie Ewing - Oh, the trials and tribulations of the youngest Dallas brother and his new wife. They were good looking, well dressed, and troubled - but we routed for them. Memorable mostly because Pam lived as a widow for a whole season and later discovered it was all a dream.

Sam and Diane - Two of the most obnoxious Cheers people you could imagine, but memorable for their difficulties and inability to ever really get the relationship right.

Blake and Krystal Carrington - Glamorous, mature, and very, very, wealthy. Memorable for any number of reasons (mostly just because of the publicity stir that Dynasty created)

Marge and Homer - Marge and Homer Simpson's relationship doesn't have the abuse element of The Honeymooners, but the patient, blue-haired, Marge has a problem on her hands nonetheless. Memorable because Homer and his whole family is memorable, and memorable, of course, because Marge has tall, blue, hair.

Niles Crane and Maris - Like Gladys, Maris was never seen. As with Gladys, the mystique (and unrelenting jokes without limitations) made this couple memorable.

Ross and Rachel - The ever-troubled, ever-in-tumult relationship between Friends, Ross and Rachel, made this couple memorable.

Ray and Deborah - This Everybody Loves Raymond couple could have used counseling, because Deborah's sharp criticism of Ray would be considered, "verbal abuse". Ray's childish inability to be supportive could have used some addressing, too. Still, Ray and Deborah were funny enough to make us laugh year after year.

JD and Elliott - Scrubs' JD and Elliott aren't the most well adjusted, mature, or even likable of people; but an awful lot of viewers care about what becomes of them at the end of the series.

Gabrielle and Carlos Solis - Desperate Housewives' Gabrielle and Carlos are a couple of pieces of work, but they're among the memorable couples of recent television.

Pam and Jim of Dunder Mifflin - It took these two folks some time, but they make a nice couple who will most likely become very memorable.

and Finally, a non-couple/couple who will most likely become memorable:

Christine Campbell and her ex-husband, Richard. This ex-couple/divorced duo may be the beginning of a new kind of memorable couple. They're great friends (he says they're not friends) and amicable ex-partners with only hints of resentment from time to time.

Again, in the words of Mr. Hupfeld: "The world will always welcome lovers,
as time goes by."
