Men's Summer Fashion
posted August 22, 2006 - 7:47pmTight and thin is "in" this summer season and most fashion critics are not talking exclusively about female fashionistas. Men's fashion is trending away from loose-fitting, shapeless, and baggy looks of late and moving toward a slimmer sleeker look. The slender style is particularly evident in men's suits and jeans as Hollywood stars trade in their destructed jeans for rail thin denims.
Dior Homme's Spring/Summer 2007 collection for July men's fashion week in Paris along with Gucci's Milan men's collection confirmed the trend. When it came to jeans, the rockstar look was "it" as model after model sauntered out looking like indie-rock icons of the past. Before Balenciaga and Dior resurrected the stove-pipe jeans, men who wanted that look often perused the women's section in search of their skinny jeans fix.
The Boston Globe's Christopher Muther reported on the men's fashion trend at Gucci and quoted British designer Ozwald Boateng as saying, " A body-conscious look is just more flattering. If there's no shape to your clothes, your body is also going to look shapeless." According to these designers, men are no longer able hide their physique behind layers of ill-fitting clothes.
Some critics point to a return to 80's slim fits, while others see it as a resurgence of Jazz Age style of the 1920's. During that period, suit coats were tight in the waist with buttons closely paired together in single breasted style. Pants, of course, were a slim straight fit.
The trend was thought to have fallen on deaf ears as only urban hipsters and artists donned the slimmer styles. As major fashion houses picked up the trend and Hollywood celebs like Justin Timberlake and Orlando Bloom appeared in tight fitting jeans and suits, the craze ensued.
Hedi Slimane of Dior truly trail blazed the path to the skinnier male in 2004. Slimane blended well-defined lines with a street look that was ahead of its time. The skinny suits provided a youthful look to the models, which was either dressed up with light shirts or down with snug T-shirts.
Various runway-watchers have speculated whether this trend in slimmer fits indicate a more androgynous style in general for men's fashion as Jean Paul Gaultier's Paris creations blurred the already fine line.
To achieve the new slimmer look, mixing and matching is not the way to go according to many stylists. Without completing the full ensemble, the body looks disproportionate. Pairing slim jeans with a baggy t-shirt or a slender fitted suit with an untailored shirt could prove disastrous. Also, the look is not for every body type. Not all men are shaped like Orlando Bloom. Just as rail thin female models are not the norm for women, rail thin male models are not the standard for regular men. Overall, the boyish fit for men this season seems to have attracted a significant following as designers, Hollywood, and the general public are increasingly turning to slimmer styles for their summer wardrobes.
