Web Design - Design vs. Technology

There are a million different kinds of web designers out there, but for me to pick someone; they've got to have a good web site themselves. If they can't even design their own sites well, what are they going to do for me? Some of the web designer sites out there have so many bells and whistles; they are way too over the top and corny. Ok, I get it, you know how to design! But I want to see something that looks professional and classy and at the same time, I want to see that they can also be playful, without looking sloppy.

But at the same time, I want to see that the designers know their way around FLASH and html, etc. What it really boils down to in having a web site is function. What am I promoting? What are my services? People who use my site want to know that stuff right off the bat. If they have to sit through some annoying introductory music or sift through a maze of information to find what they're looking for, forget it, I've lost them. They're not going to do it.

So it comes down to a balance of finesse and function. I want a designer who is artistic but who also can organize the site well and efficiently, so my viewers and customers can find the information they want, and fast. They need enough words to gain the confidence that I know what I'm talking about, but users don't want to sit there and read an encyclopedia, you know?

It's hard to find this balance in a good designer without paying costs through the nose. Either they make it so fancy and heavy that it doesn't rank well and you don't know what the heck is being offered, or it looks like someone in second grade designed it.
