Micro Reviews: Wychwood Circlemaster Beer

Micro Reviews; everything you need to know in less than 500 words.
Reviewing: Circlemaster golden pale ale from Wychwood Brewery.

What Wychwood have to say:
“Circle master is brewed using a unique blend of organically grown plumage archer barely malt. Whole lead target hops are added to create a beer of exception taste and character. The Circlemaster conducts a refreshing melody of citrus and delightful malt flavour rounded off with a spicy bittersweet finish.”

Packaging:
In accordance with Wychwood’s standard motif, it’s damn creepy. A sinister looking scarecrow pulled right out of any horror movie serves as the label/mascot. The colour green features heavily and the beer is advertised as organic. Apart from that it’s standard, with the Wychwood T-shirt competition on the back. Served in a 500 ml bottle.

Taste:
Circlemaster has an instant strong scent when you open the bottle, though not a heavy one. The taste is very light and does not render the beer difficult to drink. The primary flavor is malty, but the citric comes more from the scent that the beer itself. The aftertaste is not all together pleasant, but is mild enough that it does not put one off the beer. Overall, the taste is very ‘clean’ and clear cut. I doubt many (if any) artificial ingredients are used at all in this drink. The flavor is not complex, it is simply malty with a bitter aftertaste.

Conclusion:
Probably not Wychwood’s best beer, but like so many of that brewery, Circlemaster has its own quirky, charming character. It does not hold out particularly well against other pale ales, most of which have a stronger, more distinguished taste. Its ease of drinking though makes it a good bottle to start a night on, it does a great job of preparing the drinker for stronger beers to come. Also a good beer to introduce larger drinkers to real drinks. Overall it is vanilla, nothing to right home about, yet good enough that it frequently finds its way into my shopping basket. I may need to drink a few more to be certain.

Information:
Categorization: Pale Ale.
Alc Vol: 4.7%

Final rating:
Ease to drink: 8/10 (Aftertaste can be a little unpleasant)
Strength of taste: 6/10. (Weak, even by pale ale standards)
Price: 7/10 (£1.49 is not a rip off, but no bargain)
Overall: 7/10.
