Microsoft Office Being Replaced By Ad Supported Version

Microsoft Office Being Replaced By Ad Supported Version

MIcrosoft has announced that it will be replacing the free version of its popular Office Suite that comes on most computers today with an advertising supported version. A cache of ads will be stored on the computer along with the new version of Microsoft Office Suite.

Whenever the computer logs on to the internet the cache of ads will be refreshed.

Leave it to Microsoft to find a way to serve up ads to us when we are not even on the internet.....

However, a free alternative is available here:

http://www.openoffice.org/

It is free to download and to use.

It provides lots of options not available with the Microsoft version.

It has no ads.... Yeah!!!!

Also, IBM has just announced their intent to join the OpenOffice community and will ad their own free programs for word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, the I.B.M. Lotus Symphony. The programs will be available as free downloads from the I.B.M. Web site.

The Symphony software will be another free alternative to Microsoft’s mainstay Office programs — Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

I.B.M. is also joining forces with Google, which offers the open-source desktop productivity programs as part of its Google Pack of software which is available here:

and another article here:

Open source software is a great resource for all of us and lots of it, like Mozilla Firefox works better than the programs they were designed to replace. I know I use open source software and I love it.....

Running Both

I have to run both to make sure Xomba looks ok in all browsers. Firefox's Spell check is awesome.

I will go with Firefox any day

Actually Firefox is much more friendly than IE. It didn't take me any time starting to operate on it like a pro. The plus is that it is much faster than IE. Read my article at http://www.xomba.com/how_i_overcame_effects_of_xombas_heavy_traffic_using_google_firefox Nothing happened when i removed IE from my computer. Go to add / remove software in control panel and click on the windows components. In the new window deselect the IE and click ok. It does not remove IE from the computer, just deactivates it. To install it anytime follow the same route and select IE and press OK. That's it.

I will definitely check it out!

I have grown accustomed to IE since beginning to use it some 8 years ago, but I am willing to try something new. _______________________________________________________ "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason? Firefox and IE

Actually, I did not take off IE as I was afraid to since it is so temperamental...I was afraid it would take something out of the system file when it left and then where would I be.... So I just downloaded the Firefox and it comes up as a choice when you boot if you want to use it or IE... It only takes up 22 MB on the hard drive...I only have a 9 gig hard drive on my laptop.....so space is a premium... and that way I dont open the IE, I just open the Firefox when I choose to... I was pleasantly surprised that it didnt mess anything up.... Angel

Thanks!

I will keep that in mind for my next reformat. _______________________________________________________ "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason? For if it doth prosper, none dare call it treason." -Sir John Harrington, 1561-1612

Firefox

I love Firefox... it works so much better the IE and it does not crash my computer like IE does...... What can I say.... There is a link for it on here... http://walkaboutangel.googlepages.com/googlestuff I like it because it uses fewer resources and does not load as many processes and it is faster and crashes less often. I also like the built in spell checker which checks everything you type if you tell it to, and the scrapbook ad on. I was hesitant at first because I thought what if I need help, but there is a help forum and they answer really fast. Angel

Over The Top

I agree. I just think that MS has gone over the top with wanting to keep us served up with ads when we are not online..... Too much, too much.... My Daddy used to say that pigs get fat, but hogs go to slaughter. MS has definitely slipped over into the hog category. Angel

I use it...

Due to a known problem with Windows XP, I was forced to reformat my hard drive a month ago. Since I didn't have the disk for MS Office Basic anymore and it wasn't exactly MY copy anyway ;), I was SOL for an office program. A search on Google pointed me to Open Office. I checked it out, downloaded it (thank goodness for broadband--108MB, egad!), and now I am a happy user of it. One of these days, I'll get around to using Firefox or some alternative to Windows and break free of Micro$oft, but Open Office is a good start. _______________________________________________________ "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason? Google Documents

Google Documents is a nice replacement for office as well. They seem to be making it better and better. Their presentation program isn't available yet, but I've seen it in action and it will do pretty much what Power Point does. Of course if MS would just lower their price on Office more people would purchase it... Same goes for Adobe.
