The chances of rain were very high as the Indy 500 racecar drivers were in line for the start. With an unprecedented three women in the starting field for the first time in open-wheel racing history the Indy Racing League's rookie driver Milka Duno was hoping to race well and complete the 500 miles as part ofthe learning process of becoming a professional race driver.

Milka Duno started from the 24th out of 33 positions and had an uneventful 22 laps, when she was circulating around the track patiently under the yellow "Caution" flag with the rest of the racecars. When the green flag came-out, signaling the resumption of competition, Milka Duno rushed-up to a line of cars trailing the leader in turn-one, backed-off the pedal too late and kissed the wall on her 23rd lap.
