Mixed Messages From Obama to Terrorists: Tough in Speech but Obama Snubs Military Heroes Inaugural Ball Orders GITMO to Close

Skipping the Heroes Inaugural Ball (If there actually WAS such a ball): Not a smart move for the newly elected president who has snubbed the military before. I hope Colin Powell will take him under his wing very soon, before Obama digs himself into too deep of a hole.

I know it can be difficult for someone who has never served and has just enjoyed the freedoms that others have suffered and died for and continue to do so, to understand the importance of our Servicemembers. President Obama is lucky to have such a supporter as Colin Powell.

PLEASE, General Powell, take him under your wing and help him to understand. Also make him understand that, no matter whether the reasons that we went into Iraq were misguided, there are still those throughout the world that seek to destroy the United States and everything that our society, and the western world in general, stands for. Those who haven't seen these people face-to-face just do NOT understand how crazed and dangerous they are. These 'people' want only to bring the world down to their level and are too cowardly and incompetent to raise themselves up to be equals with the rest of mankind. We cannot just 'outlast' them. They are like cockroaches. We must crush them. We cannot 'play fair' with them; not with so much at stake.

I hope there is a serious measure of sincerity when he makes statements such as in his inaugural address; "We will not apologize for our way of life nor will we waver in its defense. And for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that, Our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken. You cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you."

The President should have backed up that statement by making time to attend the Heroes Inaugural Ball as all of his predecessors have done since President Eisenhower. He also sends a mixed message with one of his first official orders is to close Guantanamao Bay's detention facility and stop extended interrogation measures against the advice of Intelligence professionals.

Mr. Obama; Change is good and change is needed, but so is tradition and respect for our heroes which one you will never be, no matter how successful your Presidency is. (And I do wish you a very successful presidency.) You may, and I hope you do, go down in history as a great president, but you will NOT be known as a hero.

The Heroes Ball

Honestly when I read the stories about the ball. I was thinking it was the "Heroes Red, White & Blue" Ball at the Warner Theater that they were talking about, but now I'm not so sure. (I'm not up on all the 'ball' nonsense). Now looking at the articles I read on actual newspaper websites like Cleveland Leader and WashingtonTimes.com it seems they are all just parroting BS from a series of blogs without facts. I don't actually see any "Salute to Heroes" ball nor any mention on the American Legion website (some posts claim that they were sponsors) however there WAS one in 2005 where George Bush attended. MOH and Purple Heart recipients were honored at the Commander in Chief ball which Obama did attend. It looks like those BS Bloggers got me along with some newspapers on that one! Still not happy about the message he sent with GITMO and interrogations. Click here to find out how you can get paid to post items like this. It's free and easy to join.

Inaugural balls

I hadn't heard of the military heroes ball. Is it a ball for retired military leaders or those who have received medals/honors, or regular veterans? "Also make him understand that, no matter whether the reasons that we went into Iraq were misguided, there are still those throughout the world that seek to destroy the United States and everything that our society, and the western world in general, stands for." I'm hoping that the daily intelligence briefing he gets will be a splash of cold water regarding the threats that are facing the U.S., everything from chem and bio warfare to cyber attacks (the Web sites of both McCain and Obama were hacked during the campaign, from a computer in China).

I agree with pretty much all

I agree with pretty much all of what you wrote. This is not a Republican v. Democrat issue for me. It's an issue of security...and of eliminating those who refuse to coexist and instead torture and murder the innocent. I'm hoping that Obama, and those in his administration that give him advice and counsel, are also capable of seeing it in the same way. But my opinion (which is apparently "worthless" because I have not spoken directly to Obama or his staff) is that they do not. And that will not be good for us. Who is Publius? Flaws in both Liberal and Conservative

The flaws come from camping out at either end of the spectrum. The only way we will get anywhere is meet in the middle. I still hope that Obama is smart enough to recover and come closer to the center. He still has a steep learning curve ahead of him and I don't envy anyone in the job he's got right now. I may be liberal on some issues, but conservative on others. I am not a 'party line' guy. It don't bother me if two guys or two gals get 'married' and I don't care what religion you are (just don't tell me unless I ask), but if you break into my house and/or threaten my life or family, you'll probably get shot or at least beat down and hog-tied..but probably shot. STRONG military (hopefully, someday, as just a deterrent). Terrorists and those that support them should be, well, dead AND the world should be a greener place with no reason for anyone to go hungry (it works..killing terrorists reduces the carbon footprint and there will be more food). Abortion, bad unless for a medical reason or perhaps rape, not because you were too stupid to use protection (there's plenty of folks waiting to adopt). Stem cell research good. Welfare good, but you gotta EARN it! Death penalty good. Busting people for smoking pot, bad..Steven Seagal movies, really bad... Click here to find out how you can get paid to post items like this. So we all formulate most of

So we all formulate most of our opinions on something other than direct experience on a given subject. At least we can acknowledge that much. Obama received counsel on his decision. That's good. But did he take into consideration the opinions of the intelligence community and/or - specifically - those conducting the interrogations he deems inappropriate? Many of them also go through those techniques as part of their training before they can conduct those techniques on others. John McCain is not the only man in this country who has the authority to speak on this subject. But I'm sure McCain would have preferred water dripping on his nose than having his limbs broken. Furthermore, you do not need to have been previously tortured to understand both the complexity and gravity of detaining/interrogating/prosecuting terrorists and the techniques used against those who are out to kill us - and to kill as many of us as possible. Picking out one statement on waterboarding from the overall argument I made seems quite petty and irrational. I'm hoping you were not trying to use that as a way to dismiss all of the points I've made. Who is Publius? Join Xomba and get PAID to write - CLICK HERE!

I'll stand by that "line of reasoning", sure

Well, by your logic, if we only express opinions on matters in which we have been directly involved, there wouldn't be much discourse in this country. And with that same logic, Obama has no place to make the determination that waterboarding is torture and outlaw it by executive decision. So, do you still want to use that line of reasoning? Only if his decision was based purely on his own knowledge of the subject. That's why people in power need to seek counsel on all serious matters and gather as much data as possible. Sure, I'll stick with that line of reasoning. By and large, we are all guilty of forming opinions on subjects of which we don't have a lot of first hand knowledge. But when someone with first hand experience of a given topic speaks, we should listen. ↑ Grab this Headline Animator

On waterboarding

Third, the "enhanced interrogation techniques" - particularly waterboarding - have worked. Is it "torture"? It's debatable, I suppose...but I, in no way whatsoever, believe it is torture. Your opinion on whether not waterboarding is torture is worthless, since you don't (I'm assuming) have any first hand experience with it. My opinion would be equally "worthless" for the same reason. One man who does have first hand knowledge of the technique is John McCain. His assessment is that it is indeed torture and should not be condoned. ↑ Grab this Headline Animator

Hmm..Killin' Killers..

It would make me think twice before killing someone. So, I guess you agree with Dostoevsky in his assertion that a killer's conscience over a prolonged imprisonment is more punishment and therefore equal to 'more' justice than putting him or her to death. I agree that that could be the case with some men and women who may actually HAVE a conscience, but how about Charles Manson? How many people could've been helped with the money saved if we had just put that psycho in the ground in the first place? He's now just become a freak-show living in a cage and wasting air and money. Oh, not to mention how we could've eliminated his 'carbon footprint'. Capital Punishment is the Choice for a Greener Future! I personally will take my chances with not ever getting myself into such a position that I would be wrongly accused of murder! I am not sure but, in recent times, has there ever been a case where a man or woman with no prior criminal record was just sitting at home playing Parcheesi and was arrested, tried and sentenced for murder then put to death? (and by recent times, I do not mean back when it was commonplace for cops to start off with "You ain't from around here, are ya boy?") If you are completely innocent it shouldn't be too hard to prove it. Of course, unless someone has devised a devious plot to frame you just like in the movies and on TV! (although, I think I have seen a one-armed man skulking around here lately...) I am not worried so much about the message to the Troops, they can deal with it and drive on! My concern is to those that wish to do us harm. This type of message, in their minds, is a victory. It bolsters their resolve and gives them hope. GITMO, yeah ok..symbolic, but don't just make a sweeping change and close it. Come up with a plan first and make sure you send the message that the detainees WILL continue to be dealt with accordingly, but under new policies. The way he immediately signed an Executive order to close it and went against Intelligence professionals in his decision to stop the extended interrogation measures which is very unfortunate necessity in some few cases. (and don't get on the whole Intelligence professionals and WMD thing, because that WAS NOT a reflection on Intelligence community as a whole, it is a reflection on the administration). It made me think that Obama (and others) are under the impression that the professionals that were tasked to do it are no more than glorified Abu Gharib guards who take pleasure in being sadists. Think about this as symbolic of GITMO: Many of the detainees there were captured after firefights with our Troops. See this as a testament to the professionalism of our Combat Troops who, after possibly seeing their comrades killed by the same people, captured them, safeguarded them, treated their wounds, and safely transported them to the detention facility. To be sure, they were not treated with kid gloves! But by anyone less professional they would have been abused and probably even killed on the spot. At least we don't beat them and then film their beheadings like the animals we are up against. Click here to find out how you can get paid to post items like this. It's free and easy to join.
