Moammar Gadhafi UN Speech Goes On... and On and On
posted September 23, 2009 - 11:49amLibyan leader Moammar Gadhafi is speaking for the first time at the United Nations, and seems to be making up for lost time. CNN reporters sending updates from the General Assembly via Twitter are noting that the Libyan leader, long a pariah in the international community, has now been talking for an hour and a half.
It seems the Libyan strongman is determined to air all of his pent-up grievances in one speech. He's attacked the United Nations and even questioned the legitimacy of the UN Security Council.
While observers agree that Gadhafi's speech has been long and winding, there's still no agreement over how to spell his name. Some news sources use Moammar Gadhafi, while as Wikipedia notes, "Al-Jazeera uses Muammar al-Qadhafi (Al-Jazeera English uses Muammar Gaddafi...and the U.S. Department of State uses "Mu'ammar Al-Qadhafi".
Maybe everyone can just agree to call him "Mr. Libya," since the name of his country is at least easy to spell and everyone agrees on what that spelling is?
Gadhafi has been having trouble finding a place in the New York City area to pitch his tent (literally... when he travels abroad he takes with him a large Beouin-style tent, though it has air conditioning and other creature comforts). A town in New Jersey made it clear Gadhafi's tent was unwelcome there, so he recently had it put up on an estate in Bedford, New York, a piece of property owned by ... Donald Trump, of all people.
Trump's people say they leased the property to some middle eastern folks and claim that they didn't know that Gadhafi would be using the property. Hmmm, how could Trump and his people NOT know that Gadhafi would be traveling there with his entourage, considering all the diplomatic and security considerations that would be involved?
UPDATE: Well, it seems the Gadhafi UN speech has finally ended, clocking in at a little over an hour and a half. He did not break Fidel Castro's record, though he has put himself firmly in the Hugo Chavez league of extended public speaking. But as CNN reports, Gadhafi's speech managed to mention everything from critiques of U.S. foreign policy to a suggestion that the UN be moved out of the U.S. to questions about the assassination of JFK.
