Monkey Meat at Center of NYC Court Case

Ah, diversity. You've got to love it. Into America's legendary melting pot we put many beliefs, cultures, peoples, and...monkey meat?

A current court case in NYC pits Liberian immigrant Mamie Manneh, who has admittedly imported monkey meat from the Western African country of Guinea, against the US Fish amp; Wildlife Service for the importation of bush meat.

The prosecution says that bush meat poses a major health risk and importation is blocked for that reason, but the defense says there is nothing wrong with a little monkey meat and that the only reason that this has gone to court is Miss Manneh is a poor immigrant ignorant of the customs of the U.S.

There are far more "interesting" food sources that we Americans already ingest to take Mamie Manneh to task for eating monkey, which is harmless and doesn't involve any endangered species. If we are going to allow other peoples from other countries to live here, we should allow a certain amount of grace for their customs.

Immigrants need to obey the law or go home

Historically, immigrants to our country have had to adjust... not the other way around. My immigrant ancestors had to learn English and had to learn to make traditional dishes from home with foods that were allowed here. European immigrants have had to learn to eat cheeses made from pasteurized milk, which eliminated some of the traditional favorites. Meat products from many countries have been disallowed in this country. These restrictions are for health reasons. There was never any question about allowing foods that presented a public health risk to be imported out of sympathy for those who missed eating them. Handling and consuming monkey meat is an extraordinary health risk and it has been disallowed for excellent reasons of public safety. If immigrants don't want to abide by the rules of our culture they should stay home in their own culture. If they find our laws to be too restrictive for them to be happy, they should go home. If eating bush meat is truly so important to them, they should go live in a country where it is allowed. Immigration into our country is a privilege that we extend to people. They are welcome to come here and to live and work here if they are able to obey the rules. If they choose not to obey the rules, they are welcome to leave. Angel
