More Brutal Crackdowns on Iranian Protesters: CBS

The title of a recently released CBS News article is "Iranian Police Clash With 3000 Protesters. Tear Gas and Truncheons Are Used To Break Up Post-Election Demonstration Outside Mosque". This is yet another clear example of human rights abuse because, AS FAR AS WE KNOW, the demonstrators were protesting peacefully, although vociferously and they were beaten with truncheons or police batons in a VIOLENT police crackdown.

According to CBS, "Witnesses told the Associated Press that some protesters fought back (by) shouting "Where is my vote?" There is no evidence in that sentence that the protesters used violence .

In addition, "They said others described scenes of brutality - including the police beating of an elderly woman - in the clashes around the Ghoba Mosque". This is a blatant example of human rights abuse, BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY THAT THIS ELDERLY LADY COULD HAVE FOUGHT BACK AGAINST STRONG-ARMED POLICE OFFICERS LOYAL TO IRANIAN STRONGMEN, SUPREME LEADER AYATOLLAH ALI KHAMENEI AND PRESIDENT MAHMOUD AHMEDINEJAD.

Furthermore, "The reports could not be independently verified because of tight restrictions imposed on journalists in Iran" and "Iran's standoff with the west over its crackdown on opposition protesters escalated Sunday after authorities detained several local employees - a move that Britain's Foreign Secretary called "harassment and intimidation". The Ahmedinejad regime is trying to use scare tactics, when in fact they are afraid that they are not competent and can only rule through the use of brute force and arbitrary arrests.

According to a statement issued by EU Foreign Ministers, meeting in Corfu, Greece to discuss the Iranian crisis, "They make it clear to the Iranian authorities that harassment of foreign OR IRANIAN staff working in foreign embassies WILL BE MET A STRONG AND COLLECTIVE EU RESPONSE". The hard-line Iranian authorities may look at this in two ways. They may say 'OK you're condemning harassment of your people. Fair enough BUT YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO TALK ABOUT WHAT WE DO TO OUR OWN PEOPLE". As for the "strong and collective EU response", it is often "collective" BUT SELDOM "STRONG" because this is the language used at all summits, BUT THE POLICIES AGREED ON AT THESE MEETINGS/SUMMITS/FORUMS ARE RARELY, IF EVER, PROMPTLY FOLLOWED THROUGH/IMPLEMENTED.

According to British Foreign Secretary David Millibrand, "The idea that the British Embassy is somehow behind the demonstrations and protests that have been taking place in Tehran...is wholly without foundation". Iran is clearly trying to lump the US and Britain together.

Last Friday, a senior cleric lashed out at Britain: "In this unrest, Britons have behaved very mischievously and it is fair to add the slogan 'Down with England' to 'Down with USA'". It's too clear that this is a hardline cleric loyal to Khamenei and Ahmadinejad.

Yesterday, Khamenei said "I admonish both sides not to stoke the emotions of the young or pit the people against each other. Our people are made of one fabric". "Pit the people against each other?" By declaring that Ahmadinejad won with an overwhelming majority while Mousavi had no support, Khamenei has done precisely that. "Our people are made of one fabric" suggests that EVERYONE supports Ahmedinejad's brutal and oppressive policies AND THIS IS A FLAT-OUT LIE.

Senior White House aid David Axelrod denounced the latest events in Iran. In an interview Sunday on ABC's "This Week With George Stephanopoulos", Axelrod said that "This is political theater" which is precisely what the Iranian presidential elections have been. Axelrod hit the nail on the head.
