More Calls For Zelaya's Return: Yahoo!

The title of a recently released Yahoo! article is "Honduras Government's Isolation Grows After Coup". This is a case of 2 bad systems. The ousted incumbent,Jose Manuel Zelaya, wants to hold a referendum to extend his reign WHICH IS ILLEGAL UNDER HONDURAS' CONSTITUTION while the man who overthrew him Roberto Micheletti, DID IT IN A COUP. The battle lines have been drawn.

The first sentence is "Thousands of Hondurans demonstrated Wednesday for the return of ousted president Jose Manuel Zelaya, who vowed to fly home this weekend despite a warrant for his arrest". We can compare this case to the case of ousted former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who is staying in SELF-IMPOSED exile TO AVOID PROSECUTION.

"Newly appointed President Roberto Micheletti said it would take a foreign invasion to put Zelaya back in power and said he was sending an international delegation to Washington in an attempt to reverse the country's increasing international isolation". Leaders have a certain amount of power and influence which most people will not give up without a fight. However, in this epic battle, innocent civilians have been caught in the middle. The key words in this sentence are "increasing international isolation" and no country can survive in the 21st century (Attn: Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang) without international partners (Donald Hong Kong needs more allies than "the central (Chinese) government").

On top of all this, "The Pentagon suspended US-Honduran military operations and the World Bank said it was freezing loans. (In addition), "Honduras' three neighbors have suspended cross-border trade". The impact of this political stalemeate's economic consequences will be much more devastating. A government may not be functioning very well BUT THAT'S A MINOR PROBLEM CONSIDERING THAT MANY PEOPLE WILL NOT HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT BECAUSE OF THIS UNREST.

30-year-old farmer Javier Santos yelled "We want Mel! (Zelaya's nickname)". He is facing an uphill battle.

Meanwhile, "The largest pro-Micheletti was in Choluteca, 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of the capital, where demonstrators wore the blue and white of the Honduran flag". Micheletti is being portrayed as the patriotic Honduran.

These are the two sides of the political sides of the political divide. So, what's the media in Honduras saying about this? Which side are they on? "Those protests (i.e. the pro-Micheletti demonstrations) received heavy media coverage on Honduran television stations, WHICH ALL BUT IGNORED THE PRO-ZELAYA PROTESTS. (In fact), Leftist broadcasters say (that) THEY HAVE BEEN FORCED OFF THE AIR OR HAD SIGNALS INTERRUPTED BY SOLDIERS UNDER ORDERS OF THE NEW GOVERNMENT". So, the media is clearly on Micheletti's side.

Adding to the drama, "The OAS (Organization of American States) gave Micheletti until Saturday to step aside before Honduras is suspended from the group, an ultimatum Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza said "was meant to show that MILITARY COUPS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. We thought (that) we were in an era WHEN MILITARY COUPS WERE NO LONGER POSSIBLE IN THIS HEMISPHERE". This has increased the number of 'Hitler-like' politicians (the most vivid example of this is Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez) who use the democratic system to get into power, ONLY TO ABANDON IT AFTERWARDS.

Zelaya simply said "I'm going to respect those 72 hours that the OAS asked for". This is just a spectacle, because when Zelaya was holding that referendum in an effort to increase his power and extend his term, he surely wasn't talking about "respect". This is the fundamental characteristic of A DICTATOR.

Micheletti said: "He can no longer return to (asume the powers of) the president of the republic UNLESS A PRESIDENT FROM ANOTHER LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRY COMES AND IMPOSES HIM USING GUNS". Wow, this is strange, interesting and fascinating all at the same time. Micheletti only recently overthrew Zelaya in a coup and now, he seems to be instigating more violence. He seems to be asking to be overthrown.

Micheletti also gave a stern warning that "7.5 million people will be ready to defend our territory". By using the word "our", Micheletti is clearly indicating that he is in charge and that since Zelaya is essentially an alien ("our" and 'their' or 'us' and 'them') he doesn't fit into the Costa Rican government.

As far as Zelayah's supporters are concerned, here's what Micheletti's Foreign Minister Enrique Ortez had to say: "We will let his companions enter if they represent friendly countries (i.e. countries that support MIcheletti). If not,(then) no". This is political censorship by definition.

In another strange twist, "UN Ambassador Jorge Arturo Reyna said (that) he only took orders from Zelaya's government" which only leaves us, readers and analysts, even more confused as to who the legitimate leader of Honduras is or should be.

According to Albert Ramdin, Insulza's deputy, "Members of the OAS stated very clearly that they do not recognize anybody else other than President Zelaya as constitutional president of Honduras".

Santos offers an interesting conclusion: "The people are with him. The poor people - AND IN THIS COUNTRY, THERE ARE MANY POOR PEOPLE". In other words, Costa Ricans' opinions are split based on socioeconomic class, which implies that Roberto Micheletti is an elitist, favoring the upper echelons of Costa Rican society over poorer farmers who are the majority.
