Martin Luther King Jr. uttered one of the most famous words in American history: "I have a dream ..." yet nearly 40 years after his assassination must people can’t remember more than one sentence. All the average American knows is that this guy Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream and led the 1963 March on Washington but they have no idea what his dream was or what the march was for. King was more than a equal rights anti segregation activist he was the moral leader of our nation in a time that our morals were corrupted.
At the time of his assassination in April 1968, King was working on anti-poverty and anti-war issues. He was a strongly opposed and vocal about the Vietnam War in 1967, and was in Memphis in April 1968 in support of striking sanitation workers When .King took on issues outside segregation such as poverty and militarism because he considered them vital to make equality something real and not just racial brotherhood but equality in fact it ended up placing a strain on his relationship with the White House.
So instead of letting this Martin Luther King Day pass as just a day off from school; or work please take some time to reflect on Dr. King’s message. He was a man of great courage and widely unpopular at the time of his death however after his death his dreams came to fruition making him a true American hero and role model.
