Motorized Scooter Laws
posted September 1, 2009 - 2:20pm
According to the Michigan State Police, a Motorized Scooter is considered a Go-Ped. It meets the same official requirements as a Moped, thusly has a few different rules than would a motorcycle. The following topics are in reference to Michigan Laws, and while other states have
similar laws, you’ll definitely need to check out your own state’s specific laws to know how they feel about motorized scooters.
Moped to Motorcycle
If a motorized scooter exceeds any of these criteria however, they become a motorcycle and must be registered with the Secretary of State: ability to go over 30mph on a level surface, 2.0 brake horsepower, 50cc or requires the operator to change gears.
Age Requirement
A properly registered motorized scooter may be operated on any street by anyone 15 years of age or older with the proper moped license. Anyone under the age of 19 must wear a helmet. Anyone under 18 must have their parents sign their license application.
Night Riding
Night riding is legal, but not recommended. Make sure the motorized scooter has working head lights. Wear a helmet with reflective strips on it. Also wear proper reflective clothing.
Stay off the Interstate
If a motorized scooter does not meet the requirements of a motorcycle, it is not permitted to be operated on any interstate. Any illegal operation will result in the impounding of the motorized scooter and a fine for the operator.
Things to Remember
It is against the law in Michigan to ride with a passenger on a motorized scooter, even if the scooter has a passenger seat. Ride on the far right of the road staying out of the flow of traffic as much as possible. Keep both hands on the handlebars. Never grab a car and “tow” yourself.
