Movie Review: The Accused Starring Academy Award Winner Jodie Foster

In light of the recent alleged gang rape of a 15 year old Richmond High School student in California, I thought a review of a movie based on a similar incident would be appropriate.

The Accused is a movie starring Academy Award Winner Jodie Foster, based on a true story of an 1983 gang rape in Upstate New York, of a young woman named Sarah Tobias. Sarah is an average woman who works hard, and flirts a bit too much with the guys. After having a fight with her boyfriend she goes to the local bar to let off some steam.

After arriving at the bar, she has a few drinks and starts to dance a little provoctively. This is when the gang rape begins. There are several on-lookers that do nothing, and actually start to egg-on the rapists to keep it up. No one does anything while Sarah is saying No over and over again. After the rape, she meets District Attorney Kathyryn Murphy, played by Kelly Mcgillis, famous for her role in Top Gun. Murphy is quick to ask for a plea bargain, because of Sarah's questionable past. Sarah is outraged at Murphy and feels like she sold her out. After realizing what this is doing to Sarah's life, DA Murphy, decides to go after the on-lookers to get justice.

Ona personal note, this is a powerful film about right and wrong, and true justice. It shows that we are our brother's keeper, and to ignore that and do nothing, or as well be a sideline advocate of a crime that no woman should suffer, should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. I do recommend if you have any past issues with violence or rape, that you have someone watch this film with you. It is quite graphic in it's portrayal of the rape itself. I give this movie 5 stars and a big thumbs up!

*Jodie Foster won the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Sarah Tobias in this film!

Yes!

I have seen it several times. It has Richard Crenna in it, who is one of my favorite actors. I had the biggest crush on him when he played on The Real McCoys. Remember that show?

I loved this movie it dealt well with a very important subject.  If you want a really good movie regarding the treatment of women rape victims try and get a copy of the "Rape of Richard Beck" it is about a policeman who treated women rape victims pretty shabbily until he is raped himself.
