Movie Review: Against the Dark
Steven Seagal fighting off vampires in a post apocalyptic future - now, that sure sounds great, right?

The trailer for AGAINST THE DARK really wanted me to see this flick. After having seen it, well... I really don't know what the hell to write. This is really, really bad and boring. And I can't tell if it's so bad it's funny, or just unwatchable. I guess it's the latter. An American pal thinks AGAINST THE DARK (shot in Romania) feels like if Bruno Mattei and Albert Pyun had co-operated on a movie. Well, maybe it does. If you wanna look at this atrocity in a positive way.

Alright, in this post apocalyptic world where mankind is dominated by vampires (like in I AM LEGEND), a bunch of humans is barricaded in a hospital and Steven Seagal, armed with a samurai sword, and his leather coat wearing elite squad are sent to help them. For some reason, there's only one door leading out from the hospital (?!), and nobody realizes they can get out through the broken windows through which the vampires get in! The logic of this movie is totally retarded.

But the absolutely best thing about AGAINST THE DARK, is that Steven Seagal did this movie as a favor to the director - despite playing the lead, he only fimed for three days. Three days! To make his scenes look more and longer, a scene with Seagal and his men just walking is repeated several times during the first twenty minutes. So - the hero of this movie is hardly participating in it at all.

However, I'm pretty fascinated by the fact that they hired a name actor for three days. I know of some rather well-known actors who nowadays mainly appear in B-movies, and they charge around $5000 a day. It would be interesting to construct a screenplay after this, and make the leads complex although the whole thing is shot in three days. And then shoot a slimy bad guy in two days, a supporting character in one day...

But AGAINST THE DARK is far from complex. Don't rent it.

...On the other hand, maybe I one day in the post apocalyptic future realize that this film is both great fun on purpose and complex...
