Movie Review: Lost Treasure

B-movie ace Jim Wynorski has directed more than 80 movies. The quality varies; sometimes it's pure trash - cheap and boring, and shot during one single weekend - and sometimes, his movies are extremely entertaining. After all, Wynorski directed the all time classic THE RETURN OF SWAMP THING. He uses several pseudonyms, among other things because he doesn't want to put "Jim Wynorski" on too many movies a year. Strangely, he rarely puts his real name on the higher budgetet movies he makes.

He calls himself Jay Andrews in the credits for 2003's LOST TREASURE, a film with a slightly higher budget and, well, it's watchable. This is a rather traditional treasure hunting adventure, Stephen Baldwin is the two-fisted hero, pieces of torn apart maps are put together, and I can't say I remember much of the plot - but the movie sure isn't boring. On the other hand, it isn't a film you want to shell out money to rent or buy, this is something to catch for free on late night TV.

...And it's always fascinating that all these skilled, experienced American B-movie directors can throw a movie together in a week or two, with a result that's technically much, much better than most European movies. Okay, lots of stock footage from big budget movies help make the results look more expensive and bigger - but still!
