Movie Review: New Moon

New Moon A.jpg

I wasn't really allowed to read horror comics when I was a kid in the 1970s. I used to look in the ones my best friend's older brother had, and I was always
ogling them in the supermarket, but I never actually read them.

nbsp; But one summer afternoon, when I was eight or nine, my aunt dropped by. She had found a copy of the Swedish edition of Marvel's Tomb of Dracula #25 in a bowling alley. She gave it to me, and that book was the first horror comic I actually read - and it made a deep impression on me. The Dracula episode is the one that introduces private eye Hannibal King; a Mike Hammer type gumshoe who has to fight Dracula and a bunch of undead people, and this story, by Marv Wolfman, has a terrific punchline: on the very last page, in the very last panel, hero King is revealed being a vampire himself! Master artist Gene Colan's moody art was perfect for this, and as a little kid, I found the comic scary - for real.

To me, vampires are the ultimate evil beings. All they want is feeding on you. They may seduce you, but only to kill you, drink your blood, or eventually enslave you. Vampires to me aren't any misunderstood, tragic, suffering creatures - they're just plain bad. Evil!

Therefore, I don't like this new trend with vampire stories aimed at teenage girls; the novels, movies and TV shows that are everywhere now. These stories are most of the time allegories. Vampires represent teenage alienation. And for the most part, the vampires aren't really vampires, authors and movie directors mess with the mythology, and in most cases, what we have are sad humans with fangs and superpowers. And young girls love them. Vampires are sexy. It's cool to be a vampire. And I - an adult man and a long time horror fan - don't get it.

When TWILIGHT opened in theatres last year, I had no idea what it was. I hadn't heard of the books, which is kind of strange, since the books were a world wide phenomena before the movie. Sure, the target audience are teenage girls, but at least I should have heard of them.

Anyway, I didn't know what to expect when I went to the press screening of TWILIGHT, and what I got was a pretty lame, uninspired teen flick about a lonely girl who falls in love with a strange guy who turns out to be a nice vampire who doesn't kill humans. Despite being very weak movie-wise, TWILIGHT was a big hit and made stars of the young leads Kristen Stewart and especially the very strange looking Robert Pattinson - I remember the audience laughing out loud at the press screening when Pattinson's character Edward Cullen made his entrance. What the hell, is he supposed to look like that?!

The sequel NEW MOON is the most anticipated movie of 2009 - or ever. As a matter of fact, it's broken STAR WARS EPISODE 3's record; kids have been asking for and pre-booked tickets to NEW MOON for several months now.

And now it's here. The girls are ecstatic. Finally! Edward and Bella are back!

Yup. They're back. And that's pretty much it. I could actually end my review here, since absolutely nothing happens in NEW MOON. It's like a two hour episode of EMMERDALE FARM with vampires and werewolves, and it's a bore fest among bore fests.

For some reason, Edward decides he can't be with Bella anymore, so he leaves the town along with his nice vampire family. Bella is sad for several months. However, Jake Black - the native American (that's Indian to my European readers) - is in love with Bella, and she doesn't know what to do.

The evil vampires from the first movie return, but lo and behold: Jake turns out to be a werewolf and protects Bella! Not only that, he too decides to leave her and moves into a cabin in the woods with his all male wolf pack.

Meanwhile, the sad Edward has travelled to Italy to commit suicide; there's a bunch of old, powerful vampires with mullets who live there and spend their days sitting on thrones, and sometimes Dakota Fanning shows up as a little vampire girl, and these guys have the power to kill other vampires. They're like the jury in American Idol. So Bella travels to Italy, and...

Yes, I know, I know - I don't belong to this movie's target audience. I'm 25 years too old and a man. But that doesn't matter. The young audience will probably lap this up, but they should really demand something better than this very poorly made film.

New Moon B.jpg

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON is an insult. It goes on forever; it's 131 minutes and extremely slow moving. Most of the running time consists of poorly written, embarrassing dialogue. There's hardly any action at all and not much of a story. And it's all a bit strange and confusing, since the TWILIGHT mythology is a mess.

And then we have the wolf pack. Oh, my god, what the hell is that? For some reason that's never explained, the muscular Jake Black begins walking around bare chested, wearing very short jeans, looking kind of like Lou Ferrigno as the incredible Hulk. He's also gotten himself a tattoo (of a pizza?) on his arm. Why? Why does he walk around half naked? Don't ask me! And it's winter! And that's not all - as mentioned, he's moved in with these other guys in a cabin in the woods, and guess what: they all dress like the Hulk! What is this? Jesus, it feels like a tribute to gay icon, artist Tom of Finland! It's insane! I don't know if it's supposed to be funny, but this is hilarious! I laughed my ass off!

There's more hilarity. There are several scenes where Edward walks towards the camera in slow-motion, and there's one brief flash-forward with Bella and Edward running in the woods in slow-motion. NEW MOON is unbelievably close to being a turkey. It's also deadly serious, there's no attempts at intentional humor (which is kind of funny) besides one scene taking place in a movie theatre, and the CGI werewolves are AWFUL. If you've ever wanted to see a movie in which the Cookie Monster wrestles a vampire, well, here it is!

I heard that Edward is hardly in the book on which the movie is based. And yes, he leaves rather early on in the movie. But hey, the audience wants to see Robert Pattinson! He must be in the movie! How did the filmmakers solve this problem? Like this: Edward shows up every now and then as a ghost - yes, he's like Obi-wan Kenobi.

TWILIGHT was pretty bad but watchable. NEW MOON is awful. The only thing I liked in it, was Billy Burke as Bella's dad. Especially since he has a moustache.

But I guess it doesn't matter what I write here. NEW MOON is going to slaughter the competition at the box office and break records. The audience wants to look at pretty boys for two hours. It doesn't matter if the boys don't have anything to do in the movie.

    I hated NEW MOON.

Comments

Agreed

The movies are just really no comparison to the books. I honestly think the movies are horrible. And as long as they are, there is hardly any character or relationship development. But I continue to watch them as they come out and wait for the next, hoping it will be better than the last.

i think, from the book..alice

i think, from the book..alice is unable to read jacob at all as he is a werewolf but jacob presence does not restricts her vision about other people..alice can't read the werewolves at all but she still can use her gifts even when they are aorund..

New Moon: Potential fault and **spoiler alert**

My main reason for coming to this site (before beginning my epic rant) was to see if anyone else picked up on the potential fault as I have..
I can't remember what happened in the book in this case... But just follow me on this one because I kinda had to explain everything so we understand the scene... By the way.. as I mentioned this is a bit of a **spoiler alert**.....

****************************************************

Jake has just informed Bella that her Dad's best friend just died from a heart attack..

Jacob has driven Bella home after Bella's recreational cliff-diving experiment. She refuses to kiss him, and runs out of the truck because she sees Carlisle's car. She runs into the house and Alice is there as she'd had a vision (her gift) of Bella falling off a cliff, but not getting out of the water. Bella and Alice talk for a while, and Jake returns to make sure Bella is ok.

It's then that Alice establishes that she can't see visions when Jake is around (as Jake had pulled Bella from the water)..

Jake has a bit of a hissy fit and Alice leaves the room. Jake and Bella are then talking in the kitchen, and nearly kiss (again..just do it already..!), but the phone rings and interrupts them. Jake answers the phone and it's Edward. He had heard from Rosalie (his sister from another mister) about Alice's vision and was calling Bella's father (to see if Bella was ok). Jake answered 'He's not here right now, he's arranging a funeral' (which is true as his best friend died of a heart attack earlier).

It crosses to Edward reacting to this news as he thinks the funeral is for Bella.

It crosses back to Jake and Bella. He has another hissy fit because Edward had, yet again, restricted his chances of macking on Bells.

**This is the part where I think it faults**......

Alice runs in after having another vision and says 'Bella! It's Edward! He thinks you're dead!' - But Jacob was standing right there. Didn't she just say he restricts her visions..?

Hm, I dunno.. Maybe that only happens when his shirt is off. That seems to do alot of unexplainable things to women..

New Moon: To suck? Or not to suck?

I'm a devoted Twilight fan, I've read all of the books and just about held my breath for New Moon the movie, but it's really taking alot for me to connect with this film..

I didn't feel one bit of sadness building up to, or after Edward's disappearance. Yet I was a blubbering mess from reading the book. Maybe it's because I know the full story and what happens in the end... But unfortunately I just don't think any of the lead acting in this film is strong enough to withstand the gravity of what was happening in the book. I really hate to say it, but I've watched New Moon a few times now, and sometimes I can buy it, but sometimes it just feels like I'm watching a High School play starring inexperienced beauties.

Also, I really dislike the removal of the blue/green filter, due to I'm assuming, the arrival of the wolves to help with the portrayal of their immense heat.. It just loses the 'Twilight' feel.. It was a signature element to the original film and now it's gone. There wasn't even any blood sucking! Only distant screams from behind closed doors.. So it kinda sucked without sucking.. Not exactly my idea of a hot new vampire flick... But yes, I know, it's a different movie... but still, it's totally different..

I think the greatest parts in this film are when everyone just loosens up. The scenes which include Mike, Jessica and Charlie are really funny and cute.
'..Gotta get that protein in there..' lol it's so cute. Also I think the wolf fighting scenes are incredible, along with the return of Victoria, my favourite character. On that note too I sincerely hope the new actress set to play Victoria does the character justice or I'll be most disappointed.

But anyway, the fan that I am, or moreso, the sucker that I am (pun intended), will just wait patiently until the next film comes out.............. Then i'll wait for the next one... and maybe for one more after that...
Then I'll make a final decision... :]

Huh?

Attention: the last harry

Attention: the last harry potter movie was a pity ... what I mean is that I read the books of harry potter and bought the book, the adaptation was very poor ... it was a disappointment for me!

I always knew that the new moon was not going to be great! I'm crazy for books! But do not think the new moon is so bad! And also do not think proper to continue to point defects ... who knows if he was not going younger like this kind of movies ... who knows but have children who will enjoy ... and i can assure quenão going to be criticized for their taste! And that is what you are doing

You crack me up!

This is very interesting. I've reviewed lots of movies here on Xomba. I've trashed quite a few of them - and nobody gave a shit. It was okay to dislike them. But when I trash NEW MOON, well, THEN you attack me!

But most of your complaints are actually pretty cute. Or funny. The one who called me a STAR WARS fan... Yes, I was a STAR WARS fan. In 1977.

One called me a nerd. Pretty funny coming from somebody who's totally into TWILIGHT!

But here's a question for you: Now, if this movie is so damn good - why do you keep on telling me to read the book to fully understand it? A GOOD movie adaptation should work on its own. You can't demant an audience to read the book before watching the movie. In a way, LORD OF THE RINGS suffers from the same problem, while the HARRY POTTER movies work quite well on their own. No, I haven't read the Potter books, and Tolkien bored me to death after one chapter.

NEW MOON is the movie equivalent of a boyband. That's why teens are flocking to see it. It's like a sculpture of wood - it may be beautifully carved, but it's still a piece of wood!

Boring movies are always worse than bad movies. I watch lots of bad movies that I like - but they have titles like CHAINED HEAT.

3? You mean 4 books :S

I saw Twilight and New Moon

Your review was  colorful and quite honest, but we all must realize that this franchise nailed it! The author of the Twilight  Series and the Movie Directors  along with the other folks behind the scene understood their target audience and gave them exactly what they wanted.

They did an extraordinary job in casting the main characters and the actors did a fine job in capturing the voices, attitudes,  and body language of today's teenagers.  Why was this so effective? Well... I can answer that. They were smart enough to cast Real Teenagers. Although, Robert  Pattinson is now 23 years old, that's only 4 years older than the real thing, maybe 6 years older than his character.

Emotions are involved when people like or dislike something and the most important factor when it comes to whether we really "get something" is our 'point of reference.'

I found the first film  "Twilight" to be enjoyable to watch. It had a storyline and a good pace. "New Moon" was  a little disappointing. I found it to drag in places, and the storyline was a bit disjointed. However, I'm not a "Twihard" and maybe there were parts from the books that I missed, since I have not read any of the books.

I'm predicting the third movie will be better. One thing is for sure, "Twilight" is here to stay.  And, I'm going to give The "New Moon" movie another look.

I find it vaguely disturbing

I find it vaguely disturbing that most of my 30-something Mom friends are lusting over near teenage boys thanks to this series, lol.  :D
