Movie Review: The Smuggler aka Contraband (1980)
posted October 28, 2009 - 5:29amOne of the DVD format's advantages: ugly movies become good looking. I remembered THE SMUGGLER - which used to be a very searched after movie - as rather boring. But I had only seen an ugly, Dutch VHS release. After having rewatched this gangster movie by Lucio Fulci, I realize
it's pretty good and very entertaining.
Old giallo- and Western hero Fabio Testi is the smuggler of the title, operating in Naples. He ends up i a feud with other gangsters, who've started smuggling dope and not only cigarettes. A full scale war breaks out, gangsters are killed one by one and the police is powerless. Testi's wife is kidnapped and raped, which pisses Testi off, so he kills everybody left in the movie.
Since it's horror legend Fulci behind the camera, it sometimes gets extremely violent. The soft cinematograhy is beautifu and Fabio Frizzi's bongo theme is tough. Fulci himsels shows up wielding a machine gun during an intense firefight.
