Movie Review: Viva Las Vegas (1964)
posted October 24, 2009 - 6:37amThe jewel among Elvis Presley's movies! How can you go wrong with a concept like this? Right, you can't: Elvis is a race car driver in Las Vegas. He falls in love with Ann-Margret. Ann-Margret dances hysterically all the time - if Ann-Margret appeared in every movie ever made
and danced like this, we'd live in a better world!
Elvis is supposed to compete in the Las Vegas Grand Prix, but gets broke and must take a job as a waiter. But in the ending he competes anyway in a tough race. Cars explode and drivers probably die, but that doesn't matter, everybody's still happy, and swim school teacher Ann-Margret follows the race from a helicopter. Elvis performs the song of the title, Ann-Margret gets naughty on a stage, and she sings a song when she's angry and toasts bread in her kitchen.
I once saw this movie at an obscure film festival in Copenhagen, that only screened horror, Russ Meyer movies, blaxploitation - and VIVA LAS VEGAS. During the big race in the ending, the drunk Danish audience chanted "Go, Lucky, go!" - and when Ann-Margret was dancing like there's no tomorrow, they chanted "Go, Rusty, go!"
Elvis performs the following songs:
"The Yellow Rose of Texas"
"The Lady Loves Me" (with Ann-Margret)
"What'd I Say"
"Viva Las Vegas"
"I Need Somebody to Lean On"
"Come On, Everybody"
"Today, Tomorrow and Forever"
"Santa Lucia"
"If You Think I Don't Need You"
"Night Life"
"You're The Boss" (with Ann-Margret)
Ann-Margret performs:
"Appreciation"
"My Rival"
The Forté Four performs:
"The Climb"
