Multiculturalism and You

Multiculturalism and You

The United States of America. Think of what that phrase means to you. Think of what it means to the world. Say it again if you need to. It's the greatest nation in the history of the world. We consider ourselves the "melting pot" of the earth. "Melting pot" was used to describe the social assimilation of many different ethnic groups into the American culture in the early 1900's. Immigrants wanted to come to America to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities our citizens are born into. They were optimistic about their future here and were proud to be called Americans. They left the "old world" behind and were eager to contribute to their new country, a vast and prosperous land known as the United States of America.

In the nineteenth century, immigrants traveled here from abroad to learn our history and our language, and not only to accept our way of life, but to excel at it. Today, it's hard to find an immigrant that wants to do all of that. One of our great presidents, Teddy Roosevelt, began to see a new development in the immigrant communities in the early twentieth century. He saw waves of immigrants take advantage of our opportunities, but not try to assimilate into our culture. He had very strong opinions about people who called themselves "Irish-Americans" or "German-Americans." He felt that those who wanted to be hyphenated Americans and those who showed allegiance to their native country did not belong here. But nowadays, it is widely accepted and almost demanded that you call people "Asian-American" or "African-American." Roosevelt believed that this mentality would lead our nation to ruin.

In our public schools across the nation, multiculturalism is thought to be a noble subject of great importance for our children to learn. Meanwhile, students aren't learning basic American history. They couldn't tell you what Seward's Folly was, or who shot William McKinley. In some communities in the southwestern states, school children are taught American history form textbooks provided by the Mexican consolate which teach from the viewpoint of Santa Anna, who believed we stole that land from Mexico. This multicultural, political correctness results in the "reconquistador" mentality in the southwest. They aren't taught what it means to be an American, especially children of immigrants who grow up in their own ethnic communities, speak their native language, and practice their native customs day in and day out. We're supposed to just accept the fact that many immigrants don't consider themselves Americans. They don't want to assimilate and don't feel they have to, then complain when they feel they're discriminated against because they can't compete in a work force outside their community. They don't have a sense of pride for this country, and it's a main contributor to our population's lack of patriotism.

Millions of immigrants have come to this country to live a better life and to do things they would never have a chance to do in their native land. We are constantly told that not only can we not criticize their choice to not assimilate, but WE must adapt to THEM in order for them to feel accepted. I say, to hell with that! I'm fed up with immigrants coming here and taking advantage of our capitalism and government grants, which many native-born Americans can't receive, and never taking the time to learn a damn word of english. They want to be involved in the political process, but can't read a ballot. They want to criticize our government's laws and policies with no understanding of our history. Instead of flying Old Glory, they hang the flag of their "motherland" in their rear-view mirrors and in front of their houses. What's the point of immigrating to this country if you're not going to become an American?

In 1915, Teddy Roosevelt stated the following in an address to the Knights of Columbus in New York City:

"Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance. But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as anyone else."

Where is the spirit and loyalty in today's immigrants? Where is this spirit being taught in today's schools? Our country cannot continue to be divided by cultural boundaries and cannot be held hostage by activists who preach political correctness. We are supposed to be one nation. We're supposed to be one culture. We're supposed to be patriots. We must be Americans first, before we can succeed at anything else. We must teach naturalized and native-born citizens alike, the culture of America and what it means to be an American.

"We are a nation, not a hodge-podge of foreign nationalities. We are a people, and not a polyglot boarding house." - T.R.

I have to agree with Ken.

I have to agree with Ken. Sue, you seem to think that all we want here is white people and rich people. No one said that, an I replied to that already, but I think you're missing the point completely. No one wants everyone to become white and rich and exactly the same. The point of America is to have immigrants bring new things to the existing culture, add to it, and make it grow stronger. We're supposed to blend together, not all turn white. All we're doing now is alienating each other because immigrants are alienating themselves. They refuse to become a part of America. They just want to be a little sect living in the country and reaping the rewards of everything this country has become. As for religion, this country was based on the search for religious freedom. The blending of religions here has created many new cults and beliefs, and that's a wonderful thing. No one should be forced to believe something they don't. But why do we have to know the similarities between Christianity, Judaism, and Islam? Who cares! I know the differences because I studied religion, and even if it allows me to understand some of the Middle Eastern mentality, it doesn't help our country for me to know that, or my relation to our country. If I had to choose between my kids learning about American History or Islam in school, clearly I would choose American History. And that, Sue, is the point of this conversation, that Americans don't know enough about America, and America, as a country, UNITED, is breaking apart. WE CANNOT BE UNITED IF THERE ARE SECTS OF IMMIGRANTS REFUSING TO BE A PART OF THIS COUNTRY AND YET LIVING HERE. That is the utter opposite of United. If you have a problem with that founding principle of this country, tough. It wasn't the United Whites of America, and it still isn't.

Schizo? Not me.

My goodness, something must have really rattled your cage! Schizo? Not me... but your comments seem to alternate between logic, humor, and hostility, so it's hard to tell when to take you seriously. I've come to assume that when you post bombastic comments they're a joke or maybe you're just having a bad day. The De Niro reference was joke, sorry you didn't get it. And yes, De Niro is spelled correctly. Guess you were too busy spewing bile at everybody to take 20 seconds to look it up. Being passionate is one thing; calling other people's comments stupid, bullshit, etc. is just abuse.

That is incredibly

That is incredibly irrational. No one has said anything like that. Everyone has merely agreed that we're a melting pot, not a mixing pot. Of course we accept different cultures, they add to our own. But when people come to this country and HATE this country, or are only loyal to the country they came from, that's not okay. No one said we only want white people. No one said we only want rich people. Actually, no, you said that, so maybe you're just ranting about yourself. That is the most ignorant trash I've heard on here yet, and even though you're railing against it, you're the only one who said anything about it one way or the other.

Americanized

I'm glad you're passionate. You should be, this is a great country and should be appreciated, but it sounded like you were saying if you appreciate your heratidge you should get out of this country. All immigrants need is time. Every wave of immigration has caused this same discussion. If you were well versed in American history you would know that when the Germans had their big wave of immigration in 1881-1890 Americans were prejudice against them and were angry at how unassimulated they were. Then it was the Irish, then the Italians, then Astro/Hungarians, then the Jews, the scandenavians and the Russian baltic states. Each group harvested such concerns that the governent was forced to put restrictions on how many immigrants could come in from each country a year. That worked out sadly for jews of all European nations during WWII. Now we fear the wave of Mexican immigrants. In all honesty this too shall pass. Over time they will assimulate and there will be a new wave of immigrants that we will harp on and fear as being anti American. This conversation is not new and has been around since 1820 when immigration picked up in America. SO breathe easy kknowing that thisis a never ending cycling and that everyone new to the country eventually will settle down and become Americanized. oh yeah, and check out my post "Upton Sicnlair found the lies America is selling." Its about how America has changed and is no longer the land of opputunity. I know if you are having a passionate defense over this article you are gonna LOVE what I have to say about the American Dream....or should a say the Canadian Dream. HA HA

You're tragically misled

You're tragically misled here! Studying the world's cultures doesn't bring us closer together, it pushes us apart! Multiculturalism stresses the DIFFERENCES between us and it is those differences that start all the world's conflicts and wars!! Why was America the greatest country in the world? Because it was a place where different cultures melted together AS ONE and united around a common goal, namely the freedom that can ONLY be achieved through a true democracy, of the people and for the people. Now we're just an angry hodgepodge of people who can't even stand their neighbors, like Europe but its door-to-door conflict rather than border-to-border. Good job guys, keep up the good work. Glad we're all different now, it sure makes life interesting and worth living.

Bullshit. Pure bullshit.

Bullshit. Pure bullshit. We don't equip our students with the reasoning skills necessary to navigate the internet. The internet is 99% spinned garbage, half-truths, and flat out lies. These kids don't know how to tell the difference, and THAT'S where the problem is.

That's right! Good job!

That's right! Good job! Christianity, Judaism and Islamic are branches from the same tree. Muslims believe Abraham (Originator of the Jewish faith) and Jesus as prophets and all three religions pray to the same God. Wow someone educated on this site --Sue

What? Did you make a point

What? Did you make a point in that schizophrenic mix of quote and blather? And yes, if Robert De Niro(I not sure you spelled that right, but I'm going with it) was flying the flag of his "heritage" rather than the flag of the country that made him rich and famous and supported thim for his entire life...yeah, I'll gladly roast marshmallows on it.

Who's stereotyping who now?

Who's stereotyping who now? I'm not saying I want everyone the same, I'm saying I want everyone on the same page, which is completely different. I didn't say hang them for being different, I said hang them for being letcherous, also completely different. And is hang them "too strong" for you, not "politically correct" enough? I'm passionate, deal with it.

Muslims believe in Moses and Jesus

Americans are often surprised (I know I was) to learn that the Muslim faith accepts these figures as prophets, as Christians do. The Koran presents the teachings of Muhammed, the main prophet whom Muslims follow.
