Museum Review : A Visit to the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
posted July 9, 2007 - 11:25pmThe Senator John Heinz History Center opened in 1996. It is located on Smallman Street in the strip district of Pittsburgh. A recent visit to the Center proved a rewarding experience.
Admission prices are reasonable, with the current (2007) single adult rate at $7.50. The information kiosk provides a facilities map and brochures. A well stocked gift shop is located nearby. The staff is pleasant and knowledgable. The upper floors are accessible by stairs or elevator.
Beyond the entrance is a large common area that includes a few antique vehicle displays, refreshment counter, and seating. The remainder of the first floor features a large special exhibitions gallery.
The second floor a regional history exhibit that traces life in Western Pennsylvania from 1750 to the present era. It includes displays of artifacts and photographs, presented as a chronological walk through history.
The rest of the second floor, and half the third, comprise the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum. The exhibits in this section include memorabilia of high school, college, and professional sports teams from the Pittsburgh region. Athletes such as Franco Harris, Roberto Clemente, Mario Lemieux, and Arnold Palmer are represented.
The fourth floor is home to special collections and exhibits. These include a display looking at the history of the H.J. Heinz Company. Also, Pittsburgh's heritage as a producer of glass, wood, textiles, and metal products, as well as it's industrial history, are represented. The rich cultural diversity of Pittsburgh is celebrated by a collection of ethnic domestic items.
The fifth and sixth floors have additional exhibit space. There is also a library and archives.
Six hours were spent at the History Center over two consecutive days. This afforded time for only a superficial viewing of most collections. Considering the many options available, it seems best to concentrate on one or two specific areas of interest during a visit. This provides a more enjoyable experience, as it is easier to digest facts and appreciate the exhibits. For history fans visiting Pittsburgh, this is a highly recommended addition to their itinerary.
The Senator John Heinz History Center is a property of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania. The History Center is also an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.
It is a good idea to contact the Center about hours of operation before visiting. The library and archives maintain a slightly different operating schedule.
