The Mutt
posted October 7, 2009 - 11:08pmA father took his boy to a Dog Obedience School to get him a dog. The trainer lined up all his dogs, and what a collection there was.
The man asked the first dog, “Well, what do you say about yourself?”
The dog replied in a royal English accent “I am a Lutheran Labrador and I was the top of my class. I aced every class and that with style. I can retrieve anything you throw or shoot out of the sky. I can sit and jump through any hoops and I broke new records for the obstacle course. I can bark, sit, and lay down on command. I can do it all."
“Well,” the man said, “you’re not really what I am looking for, sorry.”
The next dog came up to him, the man wasn’t sure if it was a dog or not because of the funky haircut. "What do you say about your self?"
The dog replied, “I am a pedigree Pentecostal Poodle. I was one of the King’s show dogs. I have the appearance of greatness. I can whine and sing on command. I can jump and even dance on command. I am fully house broken. I can do it all. I can even be used as a dust mop."
“What else did you learn from dog obedience training school?”
"What else!" The dog replied snootily, “I can do it all. What else do you want?"
The man looked at the pedigree Poodle and shook his head and said, “Sorry, you also are not quite what I am looking for”.
The man went through interviews with a Baptist Bulldog, a Charismatic Chihuahua, a Presbyterian Pekinese, Non-denominational Norwegian Elkhound, an Advent Afghan, a Mormon Mastiff, a Catholic Cocker Spaniel, and a Protestant Pomeranian; till he finally got down to the last dog, and oh what a mangy dog it was.

The man, after all the other interviews, exasperatedly asked the one, “Well, what is your pedigree?"
“Well, master I don’t have one. My mother was a Heinz 57 and my dad was supposedly some dog that jumped over the fence one night. They say he was a street dog?”
He tiredly asked the dog, “Well, what obedience training lessons did you master?”
“Actually... I failed all my lessons. I didn’t even pass being house broken, but I think I got that one down now.”
“So, you have no pedigree, you are not trained; so, what did you learn at this school?”
“To be truthful I don’t think I learned much, but I am trying.”
“I am sure you are, but what do you have to say for yourself?”
“I don’t know except… uhhh… I really love people, especially kids. I will run with your boy, and we will play. I will sleep with him at night, if you let me. I will lick his face, and if he is sick I will snuggle up against him and keep him company. We will have lots of fun together and maybe him and I will grow up together and we will be the best of friends.”
The man turned to the trainer and said, “This is the dog I have been looking for; for he is relational, which is so more valuable to me than dogs that can jump through hoops.” The man looked askingly at his beloved son; the boy got a big bright grin on his face and nodded.
The man said to the dog, “Welcome to our family,” as the dog jumped in to the boy’s outstretched arms and licked his face.
Moral of the story, Jesus said, “Many will come to me on that day and say, didn’t we heal the sick, and raise the dead, and cast out demons,” and the he will say to them, “be gone from me you workers of iniquity I never knew you.”
But those who love are known by God.
P.S. There is nothing wrong with training and obedience as long as the first is not lost because of the latter.
God Bless.

Excellent!
What a wonderfully written article WDZZZ. I loved the story and the meaning that came with it. I love dogs, but honestly don't think that would be my first choice neither would the others you mentioned. I am more a beagle or hound man; although, I love some collies and shepherds. I know there are others but that is enough. Thanks for posting such a wonderful story my friend.

In man or "beast"
Pride cometh before the fall... I use "beast" lightly because animals can be so much more loving than humans.
I like the way you send messages. : )
The picture brings a saying to mind also... "so ugly he's/she's cute"!

I agree AndAnotherThing2 ....
Dogs are wonderful and the unconditional love they offer makes the world a much nicer place. Dogs are never ashamed of who they are with.....what a thought to ponder on. Thanks for reading and the comment.

+1 Relogion's not my thang but
dogs are such nice people - so to speak - and we need more unconditional love in this world. Have you noticed how proud they (dogs) are of their owners, no matter their standing in a social stratification table?

I giggled, although I'm not a fan of the picture. I happen to be the owner of a chinese crested, and he's actually quite beautiful...I might have to make a xombyte about him :D
