My Advice on Classes for Call of Duty Online
Hello there. You’ve probably found this page by looking for tips and/or tricks for online Call of Duty 4 or Call of Duty 5. Well, I will try my best to give what I have learned about classes by playing this game saga since “Call of Duty: Finest Hour”, for PS2. Yes, I also use a Playstation. I'll try to write in general terms as best I can as to incorporate the Xbox360, PC and PS3 versions, as well as CoD 4 and 5. Anyway, I'm going to give my perspective on a few topics, as I think this format will be the best.

When you are first staring out, you won’t have any custom slots (that will change in about 1-2 hours). This isn’t a big problem. When first starting out, I suggest that you use the submachine gun default class (MP5 in cod 4, Thompson in cod 5 I think). After a few games however you can make your own classes.
Your class should be based two things. The first being your game play, and the second being the game mode. You don’t want the same class for hardcore S&D as you would for HQ, or TDM. It’s really up to you to use the weapons you want, but there are a few that I would use over others.

In the first slot, it’s mostly things that give you inventory items, like grenades and rockets. To start off I would use the 3x special grenades, then replace those with claymores/bouncing Betties, then finally replace those with the primary grenade x3/x2. If you are a camper/sniper/defender in HQ, then you might want Betties/claymores from when they unlock (lvl 19?). At level 65 you unlock the M1 flamethrower, but it’s not really that effective in my opinion.

The second slot mostly gives you some attribute. Like more damage or faster fire. The best one in most cases is stopping power, unlocked at level 1 and gives you a 20-35% (disputed) boost in damage. Unless you have a special requirement, or are making a “ghost” (more on that later) class, I’d stick with stopping power 90% of the time.

The third slot is similar to the second, giving you an attribute. In this slot appears last stand and martyrdom. I would always stay away from last stand, and only use martyrdom in one situation. Last stand gives double points, yes, but most players will kill you right away you get on last stand. I only use martyrdom in one situation, and that is on my “shipment” class for cod 4 – and only because in that map, you die so much that it’s silly to waste 30+ grenades. I would recommend steady aim or deep impact for most people. However, dead silence is also a good option for S&D. Again, it all depends on your game type.

As far as your special grenade and your “vehicle” perk in cod 5, it’s personal choice. However I’d stay away from smoke grenades in general. I use ordnance training as my vehicle perk.

An example of a class I use? I can only do this for cod 4, because I haven’t played 5 online in months. Anyways, in this section I'll show my “ghost” class. I have three main classes I use (there are 4 below, yes, but one is the ghost that i haven't used in a while). They are organized based on, best/okay/worse, to help you. I am an attacker in most cases, and I play domination and sometimes HQ. I have lost track of the prestige I'm on, but I think its 6 (the classes are written with the assumption you high enough level to use the perks suggested or will be there soon, i.e. you are prestiging and just going thought the levels quick).

Shipment:
Weapon: P90/MP5
Pistol: Desert Eagle/M1911/M9 (m9 for extra ammo, with MP5 only)
Perk 1: Frag *3/Special *3
Perk 2: Stopping power/double tap
Perk 3: martyrdom/steady aim
Special grenade: Stun

It uses an SMG, because of the close quarters. Frag * 3 for the extra two grenades, stopping power for extra damage and martyrdom for the grenade dropped on death. Stun is the special; it’ll get you a lot of assist points if nothing else.

SMG:
Weapon: P90/MP5
Pistol: Desert Eagle/M1911/M9 (m9 for extra ammo, with MP5 only)
Perk 1: Frag *3/Special *3/Claymores (all are good)
Perk 2: Stopping power
Perk 3: Steady aim
Special grenade: Flash/stun

Same as shipment, but modified a bit. Flash grenades last longer than stun ones do, giving more chance to kill the other guy (throw in a room and you’ll kill everyone inside). I use stuns, but I'll admit flashes are better.

Assault:
Weapon: G36c/M4/AK-47/M16* (all good options)
Pistol: Best you can
Perk 1: Frag *3/Claymores/Special *3
Perk 2: Stopping power/double tap
Perk 3: Steady aim/deep impact
Special grenade: Flash/stun

I use the M16 to start and then switch to the ak-47 as soon as possible, then over to the G36c. *The m16 is good at 200 yards, and more! People don’t seem to get that the M16 wasn’t built for short range, it was built for medium. Use it at close range = death. Perks are all personal choice and dependant on the game mode and player.

“Ghost”:
Weapon: M4 silenced/MP5 with silencer /other fully auto assault rifle with silencer
Pistol: M1911 Silenced/m9 silenced (MP5 only)
Perk 1: Makes no difference to class/special *3
Perk 2: UAV jammer (only option)
Perk 3: Dead silence/steady aim
Special grenade: flash

This makes you 100% invisible on radar. UAV is jammed, and weapons are all silenced. Which weapon? Doesn’t really matter, but I would use an assault rifle that’s fully automatic (no M14, M16, G3). MP5 isn’t really a good choice because it’s only weakness is range, which is really bad, and a silencers cuts it down quite a bit. It’s acceptable however. Dead silence is a funny one. I don’t find it makes much difference, but to be a complete ghost you’d need it.

That’s my opinions as far as classes are concerned, thanks for reading. If this turns out to be a popular article then I will write another. I am writing a review of CoD 6 as soon as I can stop playing it, so be watching for it. If you have any questions, just sign up for Xomba and post a comment, it’s free.
