My Dream Job Was...

My dream job was doing construction work. I remember when I was 15 years old, my brother helped get me a job with C. R. (Bob) Hubbard Floor Covering in Little Rock, Arkansas while I was out of school for the summer. I was helping my brother and his brother-in-law sand hardworrd floors. I began by learning to sweep the floors. I thought anyone can sweep. Boy was I wrong. Dust from that Drum sander went everywhere, and the floor had to be sweept three times to get it clean. I began by pulling the broom to me. That I quickly learned is not the correct way to sweep a floor. The correct way is to get behind the broom and push the dust in front of the broom.
Soon I began running the edger, which is a disc sander that sands around the edges of the room. I loved running that edger. When the summer was over, and I went back to school I dreamed of finishing school and going back to work running that edger. When I did finally graduate a few years later, I went back to work for Mr. Hubbard again. I ran the edger for a few weeks before getting transferred to another crew. Then I began helping lay floor tile--I loved that job too, but I missed running the edger.
After a couple of years, I moved on and went to work for a different company. It wasn't a floor company, but it was still doing construction work. I knew that construction work is what I wanted to do with my life.
I moved around a lot during my lifetime from one state to another and from one job to a different one. With very few exceptions I always did construction work of one kind or another. I eventually had to go on disability. Still, my dream job was doing construction work, and that is what I did until 1990 when I went on disability. A few years later I started to college. That is when I learned to write. After learning to write my dream job would be writing stories and poems. I write on the internet at Xomba and other sites and hope to continue doing so for many years to come.

Yes it is great Nancy...
Yes it is great Nancy, but I still have a hard time believing that I actually write. Until I went to college and took Comp, I hated writing. I always loved reading--now I prefer writing to reading anytime. I still enjoy reading but prefer writing.
Thanks for your kind comments on my pieces.
Johnny
